advice on steering rack

hi guys i have a ph2 172 cup with some play in my steering prettysure its the rack cos the rose ends are fine wen u move the wheels unloaded left to right there is some movement from the inside my questions are

1 does this sound right
2 do i need a ph2 rack or will a ph1 rack fit and is there a difference between cup and non cup racks
3 how hard is it to fit im changing the engine and gearbox soon would it be best to change it while that is out

i've had to replace the rack on mine and might be able to help

1. there are two universal joints in the steering column which i would check before assuming it's the rack.

2. don't know about the Ph1 rack but do know that Cup racks are no different to Ph2 non-cups. it'll either be a TRW or a SMI rack.

3. very fiddly to fit. i think the book time is about 5 hours although it took me far longer than that; it must be easier to do with the engine/box out of the way.

Do you have play where the track/tie rods meet the rack, underneath the gaiter?

If so you might just need new tie rods.

not sure mate the rod ends are good im gettin it up on a ramp on sat to have a look ill post back wen i know

was quoted 2 hours labour from a mechanic mate of mine to fit a new rack. sounds a bit ott at five hours?

was that for the hydraulic rack? i was told the book time was something like 4.7. i'm well slow but really can't imagine anyone managing it in 2 hours. there wouldn't be any tea or cigarettes involved anyway. i'd book it in if he's quoted you that
