Advice please on a 172!!!

Hello.

I am looking at buying a 172 I have had my eye on for a little while on pistonheads, I have managed to get him down to what I think is a fair price, it's in monaco blue which I really like on a ph1 as I have only seen silver one's, it's a y registration with 99k so a little above average mileage, cambelt & service in the last year so hopefully no mechanical issue's, the advice I need is what bad point's am I looking out for, there really doesn't seem to be many around to compare it to, they are mostly ph2 182's so nothing to really compare it to, I have had a subaru wrx which I just sold so looking to get into the hot hatch market again, had a gti-6 before so hoping they will be somewhere close in comparison?

Any pointer's to look out for & how well you think the 172's drive's in performance & reliaility would be really appreciated!!!

Thank's in advance:D

If it's a ph1 it isn't monaco blue ;) it's oddessy blue.

Check under the boot carpet for creases or crash damage/repair/rust check the door shuts and boot edges for creases or repairs. Check the exhaust doesn't blow, the gearbox doesn't crunch and isn't too stiff check the inside of the alloys for grease (Split CV boot) check it accelerates straight and slows down straight (Don't hold the wheel) Check for no odd coloured smoke (blue black) on cold startup check usual stuff like mayo in the coolant. Get confirmation of the belts being done. There's more but that will do for now CBA with punctuation as I've just finished some grip exercise's and my arms kill.

Will be similar to the Gti 6 people say the pugs handle better but I can't comment as I've never driven one (But got spanked in my old 182 by a supercharged one)
The clio is a nicer all round car imo.

Make sure its had a full belt kit. Just changing the belt is a pointless exercise if the tensioner gives up in 3 months time.

Welcome to the club btw, get your tenner out.

Thank's for your advice everyone, some really handy hint's, been hearing a few horror story's about the 172/182 so don't want to end up getting stung but really love the styling of the car & used to own a phase one 16v back in the day & loved it so hoping the extra 30+ bhp will make me have a lot of smile's per mile!!!:D
