age old steering column prob

hi all, as above, my steerin column has excessive play on the valver. iv read the guide to weldin it up on that wills site. but to me this seems to be abit sketch! as in a big bodge? the garage thought this also and refused to do it, sayn if the weld snapped it likely to go on a high speed corner! which sounds lovely! just wonderin whos done it? and if anyone knos the part no, gsf or reno... been told its a relatively easy job to replace, any info would be greatly accepted. cheers ben

Cup racers had it welded up, aslong as the weld is good there is no problem, mine was fine.

If you buy a new one, it will cost you in the region of £200 fitted, where as a weld would do the job just aswell.
