Air filter options and opinions

Hi all,
I've done a quick search but cannot find the info I want really.

I need to change my air filter for an upcoming service. My options are a pipercross panel filter, a standard paper filter genuine renault or something like an induction kit?! I have the standard renault ph2 sport airbox (car is a 172) , I want to know what is the best. I wouldn't mind some extra noise, but I'm not willing to lose power for that privilege. What's out there?

I've seen various dyno runs that prove induction kits lose power, so really I'm after the difference between standard paper or uprated panel filter.

Cheers,
Ollie

Had a K&N 57i gen 2 induction kit on my 1.2l 16v clio, check my thread for pictures (click link on the left hand side where it says my car), passed emissions test on the mot fine, gives a nice growl between 1500-3500 revs...

Killed my mpg hence i removed it and sold to a fellow CS member..

Edit: Just realised you had a 172, ignore my post as it's probably irrelevant!

I have had a read through that already but I guess another read won't hurt. Was just after some other people's personal opinions as I know dyno runs aren't always accurate.

There's going to be almost no appreciable difference in figures between air filters.

It wouldn't hurt to spend a few more pennies on a foam panel filter over a cheap paper one, but beyond that don't waste your time (or money) thinking about it.

One more option just become available to me, a v6 airbox with a pipercross filter in it. What's people's opinions on them?

Gained me 0.5bhp on my old car.

Either buy a KTR Induction Kit or make your own if you can be arsed, loads of threads on here regarding that.

That's what i've got on mine, makes a hell of a good noise but not much else,
I found the car lost a bit of grunt lower down, but gained a bit higher up,
if you can get the box and filter cheap then fair enough.

You may also want to research K-Tec's IK,
alot of blokes have made their own versions that for a fraction of the price.

Make your own. Round here we all use ITG Maxogen filters and have seen good gains. All the parts are readily available off ebay.

Heres a few examples of home made ones.

I made my own K-Tec style IK, pretty much the same as the 2nd picture in the above post. I got the 90' bend of eBay along with a Pipercross Filter. I haven't noticed any performance difference, just a nice note now :)

I previously had a Ph2 1*2 Airbox with a K-Tec Panel Filter.

I decided to go for a Pipercross panel filter, mainly from a long term maintenance point of view (I wanted one that was reuseable) and have been happy with it so far :)

When you say lost a bit lower down... A noticeable amount?? I've managed to source one for £40 and that's with a pipercross inside it. I'm not too keen on the idea of an open filter which is why I'm looking into everything but.

Not really, I could have just been my car tbh,
i've had loads of services, engine work and extra mods done since then,
so if I went from a standard airbox to a V6 now, it'd probably react differently.

For £40 quid you can't go wrong mate, if you decide it isn't the set up for you,
you'll easily get your money back in the for sale section.

It's worth it just for the noise.

Okay :) one last thing, do you have any pictures of yours? Does it have any pipework coming off of it?
Cheers

I don't use a pipe, sorry i've got no pics of it.

If you look at the grill, there's a vent on the right that channels air straight onto the opening of where the V6 will sit.

Yet again... Another question.

Is there any difference between the V6 airbox and the ph1? Turns out this v6 one for sale is a ph1 box. It has a pipercross filter in it; is it worth the upgrade from the ph2 box with standard filter?
I know there isn't much difference between them at all, but if its going to make a slight difference I'd rather have it as I need to change my air filter anyway...

Thanks again.
Ollie
