Airbag and in car wiring removal

  172 Rally Car
So then chaps, its come time to prep the new rally car!

I have started to strip out the interior, as its a rally car i want to try and get rid of as much of the non essiential gubbins as possible.

Airbags assiociated looms and ecu: what can and cant i remove? and how do i remove any warning lights that may crop up?

Aux wiring: Do you have any wire numbers or looms that i can remove from the car without causing problems to systems that i will need, diagrams would be great!

I've removed alot of the associated stuff your wanting to remove from the car and wiring loom on a 172 cup. It all comes down to how technically minded you are really, but as Tony says be warned! I do this sort of stuff daily for a living and i even managed to remove one wire too many! Luckily i realised and had left enough of a tail on the wire to enable me to reinstate it!
For the warning lights i just stripped the clocks down and put some electrical tape under the clock fascia.

Tbh if its going to be a full on dedicated rally car i'd rewire the car entirely. It will give you more flexibilty than trying to adapt the original loom.

How long did it take you to put the loom together? the main issue i have is time!

what would you leave in then? would you just tape it all out of the way?

I'd leave it all in and just tape it up out of the way especially if you have little time. Then look into building a new loom when your not competing during the end of the season.

Time wise to build a loom from scratch your looking at about 10-12 hours worth of work if your doing the entire car including the engine harness.

The uch is the biggest pita on the original loom as it controls so many of the original components.

Defo just leave it alone and tape it out the way.
As said,do it when you have some down time,it's not a thing to be rushed.

right ok chaps so leave in the lot, loom ecu the works?

how do i go about removing the airbag and service lights? just remove the bulbs?

I musta dmit this is the one job that fills me with dread. I've cut back most of the airbag wires but i've quit whilst i'm ahead and left it at that. Strangely i've got no airbag lights on the dash either. Can't quite work that one out as yet tbh. Bloody Renaults.

They're not bulbs as such mate they're led's. If you fold some electrical tape in half (so it's not sticky) you can put it under the fascia plate and cover the warning lights up. It involves stripping the clocks down and using a hairdryer to warm the fascia plate as it's stuck to the clock assembly. It sounds a lot harder than it actually is to do the job.

I've removed the entire loom from my car, removed the unessecary/unused wiring (speakers, electric windows and mirrors, air bags and seat belt pre tensioners etc etc), re wrapped it using proper fire proof tape and refitted it into the car. Took about 4 hours to do.
As for the warning lights I wouldn't worry about it! You can't fail mot if they're not illuminated! Lol!

The rear section of the loom for the lights etc is on a multi plug in the n/s sill trim/a pillar, so I just took it out of the car completely and removed any wiring I didn't need sat in the comfort of my sofa! I then refitted it loosely so I could make sure everything I wanted to work still did and set about re-wrapping it with the correct Rayon fabric covered tape.
The loom that runs the length of the car is completely on show and is routed the same way as it was originally. The rest is hidden behind the dash as per oem.

If your putting a cage in that passes through the dash it's worth noting that you will need to relocate the fuse board as it will be in the way of the a pillar tube. Easy to do though. All I did with mine was mounted it in the glove box.

yes looked at the rollcage and i will mount it in the clovebox, where did you get the wireing diagrams from?

Might have to move the uch aswell

I didn't have any diagrams mate unfortunately. I work with wiring alot as part of my job anyway so it was no real drama for me.

Yeah the uch needs to be moved as well but that can be zip tied to the dashboard frame if your keeping it. Mines just zip tied up to the wiring that runs across the car.

Sam,

If you get stuck with set wiring I can get you (although rather limited) Wiring diagrams as I have Renault Diolagys so I have most workshop manuals and diagrams from Renault (The main wiring loom isn't really something I can get though) but other things such as dash components, speakers, lights and all that poo I pretty much can. It doesn't give wire colours though be warned. Just pin numbers which are real easy to trace to the right wire as it tells you what pin is what number.
