Airbag and Serv light - fault code with no description

  2002 Clio 172 Cup
Hi there,

Earlier this year i drove over a brick in the road and set off 2 of the Pre-tensioners (Drivers seat and behind drivers seat)

I have had the pre-tensioners changed and i have recently had the airbag ecu reset, before the airbag ecu was reset the cars ecu was locked and couldnt unlock it.

Put the reset airbag ecu in the car and turned the ignition on and the serv and airbag light remain illuminated. Plugged the the car in to the diagnostic and all the fault codes were removed successfully apart from one fault code.

7E00 and no description and its active - this is under airbag and pretensioners faults.

I have been quoted by Renault £80 to plug it in to their diagnostic to check the fault code but no guarantee.

Can anyone think why the car is still throwing up this Airbag/Serv light and can anyone give me any guidance to what this code 7E00 is

Many thanks

Danny

People really do need to stop looking at EODB "Generic" codes as being gospel as there's loads of codes that are pertinent to actual faults and computer states but do don't start with P, U, C, Etc!

"7E00" is the hex code for the Siemens SRS computer being in 'SAFE' mode meaning its been locked so it could be worked on without risk of setting it off. You need whoever locked it to simply unlock it again and it'll go off... It will not clear by "Clearing" all active fault codes though and will need the configuration state of the SRS ECM itself altering. If he can't do it I'll come out and do it for you but it'll obviously cost you a call out fee.

I partially understand what you are saying...

I know plugging the car into the diagnostic you can lock and unlock the cars ecu... is this what you need to unlock? or are you talking about airbag ecu module that needs to be unlocked

Your a bit far for me as i'm in the NW :(

Thanks for the help and guidance though

I work anywhere and everywhere so if you're desperate you can give me a call. You need to have the SRS module "unlocked" to resolve the '7E00' code not the "ECU" as that has nothing to do with the control functions of the airbags. It would be nice to know exactly why the SRS module has been sent out in a "locked" state though as its not the norm.

It was one of these airbag resets on ebay for £25 and i went around to his house to have it reset.

So this guy hasn't completed the reset then?

It depends... my understanding on what you've sid is:

  • The pre-tensioners have fired.
  • No other SRS uit deployed
  • You removed your SRS module
  • It has been "Reset" to to remove the crash event
Am I missing anything else?

"7E00" generally means the SRS module is in a "LOCKED" state meaning it cannot deploy any SRS unit as the trigger lines are disabled and allows a safe working environment for the tech to play about with wiring in. It can also be in that state becuase a crash code is still present hence it is "LOCKED" and un-useable.

If it were one of my customers vehicles i'd get it on the Clip to see exactly what is going off as it may be a simple problem to resolve but as you've already paid a guy to do this for you it would be worthwhile getting in touch again and politely suggesting that the unit is still in a "LOCKED" safe mode which simply needs turning off and you would like him to do it for you for free. If he can't/won't then you will need to either callout someone like myself OR you will need to replace the SRS module all together and have it setup to your car; eg. VIN, Trigger line config, etc (Although a 2nd hand unit from a similar vehicle will already be setup and will plug and play without any issues, providing hte SRS units haven't deployed... the VIN's won't match up though but that's only an issue on CanBus networks not K-Line)

That is very helpful - you've made it so easy to understand when its a complicated area to explain

You're a credit to cliosport! No wonder you got that red subtitle status under your username this year ;)

Mick, are you at CSS?

Rob, yeah I'm going "Chewi" with Daveski in his 172 but i'm not going as a trader as Dan wanted help with some prizes and I can't really give what I do away as I don't deal in tangable products per say. I will have a basic level of tools and diagnostics with me... its a Renault meeting after all so something's bound to break (LOL) but I won't be coming with the Clip or other bits as its too much money to be sat laying in the back of a stripped out Sport for all to see all day.

If anyone needs any info about my services or needs advice with problems on the day though I will make myself known... I'lll have my work mobile with me to so people can call me if i'm incognito

Mick
