Airbag controllers

  CLS, RS MEG
Random question but i need to know before auto electrician calls.

Is the airbag equipment installed on the clio range all the same? and does not differ from the lower spec 1.2 8v to the higher spec 182?
I don't mean 'some cars have side airbags, some don't' - I need to know that the airbag unit used in the seats for example on a 172, are the same unit used within the seats of my dynamique. In which case wiring 172 seats into my 1.2 16v dynamique clio will not cause compatability issues.

If your clio has side airbags and the new seats do too they will be fine, just might have to cut into the wiring (different connectors used on some). Personally I'd have the side airbags disabled, why would you want to blow out some nice seats if you just hit a curb?

Well i was thinking that Mitch, and might ask mr autoelectrician to wire in a resistor. Im not bothered so long as a fault isnt registered. Ive had it at renault on a diaognostic machine, and it got lottts of problems where the seat are concerned :(

Personally either wire in the airbags or remove them. The units are different but the voltage etc is the same. The plugs are different but that can be fixed with soldering.
You cna stick a resister in the wiring to fool the system to think theres an airbag there its very easy.

I think renault can tell the computer to not recognise it has side airbags, although this will cost a few quid it means your not putting a resistor in and your warning light will go out and can be assured the rest of your bags will work.

Your airbags work anyway, the side ones probably won't though if you've got the wiring issue. Renault can do this switching off of the side airbags by telling the UCH via a Clip (Renault PC) that the car isn't fitted with them hence no light as it doesn't think there should be one anyway.

I was told that if the airbag symbol is illuminated it's because theres a fault, wether it be airbags or pre-tentioners. And this will mean that none of you airbags will work because there is a fault. That makes safety sense to me.

All units are different - there are 13 types of airbag computer used - disconnect any of the system and it will disable all your airbag system and will cause the airbag warning light to appear on the dash - only the Renault "clip" diagnostic computer will be able to knock this off and re-set the system.

If your fitting a 172 interior into a Dynamique that should be ok as the airbag part numbers are the same - so are the seat wiring looms. Dont fit the seats with the battery connected whatever you do. Make sure the pretensioner connections are all fastened properly and you should be ok

Right, the problem ive had for months is as good as sorted!
Ive had an auto electrician on the job. If your having 172 seats put in the dynamique, get an auto elec, for 40 notes its worth it. Make sure the pretensioners used are the ones that orignally come with the car. The airbag computer measures a resistance across all components. The seatbelt pretensioners i got must be from a 172, as my computer cannot relate to its resistance, and hence still displays a 'SERV' and airbag light. I have ordered new pretensioners from the dynamique, which when fitted will eliminate the serv problem. He has wired in all my airbags, seat position sensors and front buckle pretensioners. "ohhhhh what a cafuffle"

or you could just twist the wires together for free like me:D. lol. nah good work fella, but you could have just swapped your dynamique buckle for the 172 one.

clio 172 mk2 & clio 1.2 16v dynamique use the same seat belt pretensioners - the reason the light is staying on is because youve broke the circuit

I bought the car with everything done, seats included. So the numpty used the wrong buckle. He also butcherd the lume, so nothing made sense!

The guy mentioned that j3ned, and connected the circuit up, and the clip reading changed from broken circuit to seatbelt pretensioner. I've been told on this forum in the past that my seats are not from a MK2 172, as the connector underneath were different to others with the same set of seats. oh well must be something wrong with the pre tensioner. It could be from another make of vehicle for all i know, especailly as i bought it pre installed.

would have helped to know that, I thought you were dropping some in. Not to worry, if its all sorted now well done. have fun with them being too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer, or is that just mine!!! grrr
