Airbag ECU

Hi all,
My clio campus sport 05, needs a new Airbag ECU - this is currently causing my airbag light to be on. The garage quoted 350 quid so I decided to do it myself considering they are £30 on ebay.

What info do I need to purchase the correct ECU as I dont want to buy one that wont be compatable?

Take the current one out and get one with an identical part number.

What makes you think it needs a new ECU?

Matching part numbers is as fool proof as you'd think as the X65/Clio II uses the same SRS module in all variants be it a 1.2 16v base model or a FF 182.

It is the configuration of the units that makes all the difference so you ideally need a module from a same spec car or buy any unit and have it configured correctly for your car by someone like me.

Its what the garage told me needed doing after attempting to turn off the light by soldering the underseat wire failed. They are a proper renault dealer.

There is two numbers.
One begeins with 8200 (cant remember off the top of my head), the other is 0285 001 537, which do I need?

Thanks, it is the Renault Clio Campus Sport 55 reg, what do I need to look for?

You need to look at what equipment your car has vs what the doner car has.

(By "Equipment" I mean what airbags and inertia reels your car has installed)

Sorry I'm not really that techincal, I just joined to try and get some help on this irritating problem!! I dont really understand thats all! I have been looking on ebay, so to get the right ecu for my car what would I need to search?

In that case then you would be better off taking it to someone that can sort it for you.

I think you're missing the point, the airbag ecu needs to match the config in your car. It will need to be configured via CLIP (Renault Specialist tool) to match your config. The airbag ecu's are the same on all the clio's so searching via part number WILL NOT WORK as it could have a different config to yours. If you can't work out how many airbags your car has I wouldn't be touching the ecu.

It's not a £350 job either

Thanks very much for your help I understand I seem stupid. But when I search on ebay, they are listed by part numbers not by vehicle spec? If I cant find one, am I right in saying I can buy any Clio ii ECU and have it configured to my car so it will work? If so how much would the configuration cost??

Buy an airbag ecu, and take it to your local specialist to have it configured. Where are you located?

Cheers, I think I understand that now!! Im in Lincoln - do you have any estimate on the cost of having one configured? Also, when I mentioned it to my local garage, they said it isnt possible to configure it because I would have to change the coding of my engine ECU and keys because ECUs can be used in one car only?

Then firstly never listen to their advice again. Secondly, bring it to me in Nottingham and i'll re-configure it for you for £20

You can fit it yourself if you like but DO NOT CONNECT IT UP UNTIL it has been reconfigured

Because I don't know what has happened to your old unit to make you need a replacement. I'd hate for you to kill another

Go on eBay, search airbag ecu repair. Send off your old unit, pay them £25, and they'll send it back fixed within 48hours.

I had that!! Mine was mired in cola! I sent it for repair and the guy said it took him longer to clean the coke out of it than it did to repair! Lol

I have listened, I have just contacted the people on the link you gave me, seeing if he thinks he will be able to repair it explaining it. If it fails it looks like it can be refunded, so I think I will go with that! Thanks for the help its muchly appreicated.

Well I am really sorry. Im 17, its my first car and I want to get the problem sorted. I am happy to do the work to put it in and remove it - I already had to take it out to get the part numbers. I just am looking for advice on what I need to do as it seems my local dealer are trying to rip me off with their £350 quote!!

Im 18, but I still listen! Don't go to your local dealer again because what they have told you is very wrong. Take your car to someone with clip (mick is probs the closest) and he can tell you why the light is on. Theres lots of reasons why it could be on

I can't really help on that question. Did they actually use clip too see the faults on the airbag ecu?

Also is your SERV light on as well?

Okay. So the light come on after something was spilled in the drinks holder?

It was on when I bought it. I bought it thinking it would just be the common soldering the under seat wires together so didnt worry - but that didnt work - had I have known I might not of bought it!!
But the reason I think drinks spilled on it is the fact that its slightly sticky and there is brown (cola?) residue underneath but when I took it out the connections didnt actually seem bad atall?

Chances are, it's just a warning that's been logged on the airbag ecu and needs clearing. Same sort of thing as the engine management light really!

My airbag + serv lights came on when my car only had the drivers seat in (I was upgrading my seats but needed to nip out and didn't have time to finish putting them in), so best bet is to take it to mick and let him have a look at it. He sorted mine out for me.

I can defiantly say you will not be spending £350 to get it fixed though!

Also on my old clio (1.2 16v) it was sticky on top of the airbag ecu, but never had any issues at all!

Dont even mention the Engine Management light lol!! Had enough problems with that!!

Okay thanks very much I will probably do that. I dont want to sound like im not listening, but my local renault dealer I have already mentioned said they had reset it, but to no avail??
