AL4 DPO auto gearbox oil change and other info

  Clio
A common auto gearbox circa 1999-2011 in Renault Peugeot Citroen, if anyone is changing gearbox oil here is some useful info.

Thought I would just post some useful info on this all in one post.

Besides manufactures recommendations, oils commonly recommended on the forums for this gearbox are Penrite multi vehicle fully synthetic ATF (Australia) and Esso/Mobil LT71141 (UK). Decide for yourself what to use.

Manual (pdf download) with oil change or oil check procedure, Pg 15/16, remember engine running in Park when level checking. Use an Infra red thermometer gun to get temp at 50 to 60 degrees.

There is also a less common updated drain/level plug on some later models, an ordinary sump plug and an 8mm hex plastic tube inside, both shown here:

Filler plug is in the middle of image, between the black metal gear selector and coloured wires - if it is covered by this try changing gear to access, into Neutral. Just check gear if you start the engine.

A good video showing the oil change and level check :

A good video showing dismantling the engine. Changing oil filter is a job for experts and appears about 23mins in.
