Alot of smoke and a smell of petrol?

  6/468 17poo
My cars a 1.4 's' mk1phase3, seem to smell alot of petrol, the car starts up fine but seems to smoke alot from the exhaust. cannot tell whether its blue smoke coming from the exhuast or not as im at home on me own!
could these problems be related to the head gasket?
ive noticed the smell and smoke since had an oil change and changed the engine mounts?

Anyone help?Ryan

couldbe head gasket massibvly fucked in a big way, allowing oil to leak int cahmbers, and tehn allowing teh chambers to leak out causing the smell of petrol

Shite really???now youve got me really worried now, back down the garage then tomo!!
You can smell the petrol inside the car which is quite worrying but goes on and off!theres no sign of oil around the engine, also this maybe complete b@llocks but it has smelt alot since ive put opitmax in and a bit of redex in before and the petrol is under a 1/4 now would it be burning off all the shite left behind??

Anyone shed anymore light?how much are head gaskets to replace? £30?and the labour?how hard?

Jeeeez bloody renaults!!!

Also noticed some oil underneath the exhaust manifold, on the block, its hard to determine whether this is actually oil, will have a better look tomo when its light.im gonna try and clean the engine where these black deposits are so that i no whether its oil or not!
to be honest it just looks like dirt, also with a recent oil change would it have made a mess?did get it done at a garage tho:

How hard is it to change a headgasket?how much would a garage charge?aaah shite this isnt lookin good, cheers mate!
anyone else wanna put their views up?edde?

Could also be a conincidence that teh 2 things are happening at teh same time.

The fuel lines can crack and leak vapour, andf the smoke could be something as simple as the oil being over filled. Take the car for a drive for 30 misn to 60 mins and then look for smoke to rule out it being vapour in the exhaust system.

Before you do this though check oil and water levels, if one has gone down will tell you which its burning. I always ahve a b**ch of a job telling difference between blue and white smoke

Thanks mate ill have a go tomo and see what happens!would the white deposits still build up in the filler cap anyway?
you seem well clued up, so what is the white mayo stuff?
Cheers mate, im learning!

The mayonasie is a mixture of coolent and oil which isn't good but the 1.2 16V's do this its a synpton of the car not having hot drive and the head hasgets gone but on the 1.2's it indicates the engines running they all do it.

I'd think its mostly likly someone like the fuel liones ahev worn did they change the filter if so check that they put it the right way round etc.
You need to get under the car though check the pipes etc and clean them it might just be the fact that at the service they pushed pipes round and this was the final straw and they gave up.

Ok cheers edde, but its a 1.4 mk1 ill do some serious inspection under the car tomo and check all the fuel lines!doesnt seem to be smoking as much now this could just be because of the cold temp at this time of the year,
thanks for your advice, Ryan
