I just got my car going after 2 months of it being an ornament,
i've got a dodgy alternator which drained the battery.

I've just put a multimeter on the alternator and it's putting out 12.5 volts,
don't they normally put out 14V?

I just tested the battery on 2.5k rpm and it dropped from 12V to 10V, then on idle it dropped to 8V,
so i've taken the battery out for another charge, I guess it's new alternator time.

On cold starts the aux belt is squealing,
could a slack aux belt cause the alternator to not recharge the battery properly?

if its slack enough yes

even with a squealing belt it would charge higher then 12v so its probs the regulator in the alternator that has gone also check the wires on the back it could be a loose positive wire

when it comes to charging anything from 13.8-14.5 is good even at idle it should still be sitting there my car sits at 14.5 but thats because of uprated wires better batteries aswell
