Amplifier Gain

Im a bit new to all of this, and i have done some searching but none of it really makes sense, anyway could somebody possibly post an explanation of Amplifier Gain as its of great confusion to me, apologies to all the GuRu's out there who think im an idiot

just remember it is a gain and not a volume control

needs to be set at whatever the pre-out voltage of your headunit is at the maximum volume you listen to it at

Is this why my sub/amp setup got more quiet when I changed head units?

yeah if you had say a 4v preout headunit before you might only have 2v on your new unit so it would be set "wrong" now

My new HU is better, but just seems to be quieter on the sub, i'll have to take the amp ooot and change it I guess.

tbh older alpine hu's used to use 4v preout but new ones are 2v iirc
