Another new on looking for a 182!

  Looking for 182 Cup
Good Morning all,

I know that you will have seen this post a million times from pretty much every other new member but here it goes!

My vehicle history is very mixed but have mainly had an interest in hot hatches from day 1 including a 306 gti6, 205 gti, mk2 Golf gti, more classic Minis than you can shake a stick at and lots more.

After spending six months looking for a S1 06 Rallye and being horrendously disappointed with the standard of cars for sale I have turned my attention to something a bit newer. I am pretty much settled on wanting a 182 after driving a couple, unbelievable cars to drive.

So that's why I'm here, to read up on these brilliant little cars (know next to nothing about them). I need to learn what to look for when buying and also what to do when I have it (would like to upgrade the suspension, braking, mounts and bushes etc...).

If anyone has any advice or knows of any 182s for sale please feel free to let me know.

I am going to look at a 182 today and wondered if anybody knew the car? Reg is SH04 ZNR and it's a full fat 182 in black with 70k miles. The guy selling it has taken it in px so doesn't know to much about the car. Would like to hear from the last "proper" owner if at all possible.

Thanks

Only buy a 172/182 with comprehensive service history. Unless you're buying it so cheap that you can break it for spares should it go bang.

Cambelt kit is a big expensive job and is due every 5 yrs/72k. And there are only a handful of people I'd trust to do it. Off the top of my head I can only think of 5!

Rear shocks Pop and cause wobbly handling. Cheap and easy to fix.

Engines are bullet proof providing they've been serviced properly.

Thanks for the advice, very helpful. As with any car (but especially a hot hatch) I would only buy one with FSH; I have always been of the opinion that a fully serviced and looked after car with 150k miles on it is better than a 70k equivalent with dozens of owners and no history.

I am quickly learning that the cambelt and dephaser job is one of the most important things to look out for. Any specialists that you would recommend for carrying out work to my car (if I can find one). Ideally as close to the Midlands as possible but don't mind travelling.

BirchdownAuto Services are in Malpas. They don't come on the forum any more but are top blokes with a cracking little garage. You won't find anyone with a bad review of them!

Diamond Motors are in Nottingham and @MicKPM the owner is a VERY knowledgeable bloke. He's also a registered trader on here.

Down this way (southwest) we have @Dan@SJM Automotive (massive beard but good bloke) and there are a couple in the southeast but I've no personal experience of them.

Thanks very much for the advice. Diamond Motors is probably the closest to me so I have PM'd Mick for some prices.

Let me know if you see any good 182 / 172s for sale too.

Thanks

I'd say check that the belts are done with some proof or if not factor them into the price as they aren't cheap.
