Another one bites the dust

  Monaco Blue 172
DY03 ZKL

Got rear ended by some numpty whilst I was sat at a crossing, proper whack, no idea how he hit me that hard considering i'd been stationery for so long, the girl who crossed was lucky...15 secs earlier I may have gone into her as he hit me that hard I ended up half way over the crossing and I had my handbrake on..never mind, daughter and I are both fine.

So...

Clio written off, absolutely gutted, mint condition inside, 70k, inlets done, mapped, all belts done last year got re-furbished wheels I'd just taken off for the winter with not a mark on them (only on the car 4 months).

Full and comprehensive service history.

Paid £2400 in January 14 with 58k on the clock.

Insurance say..

£1,700 + I have have my old car back (effectively £1,885)
What a joke. It's my 3rd and final offer, so short of going to ombudsman, I'm screwed. Can't find anything near it for that kind of money.

I'm going to take the car back, but now on the look out for another Monaco 172 on relatively low mileage. Keep your eyes peeled people, don't mind if it needs a bit of work, just not too much!

Ah that Sucks, The main thing is you and your daughter are OK - Good luck with sorting everything and finding another Clio mate.

  Shit little Yaris...
Strip, sell parts - pool money, new motor, batter the pleb who hit you.

  Monaco Blue 172
You should have seen my face when I asked "insurance" and got the reply "yes, I have but not sure who with"
I asked for his licence to get some ID and the licence said 'Indian Union Driving Licence of Goa State' lol! I thought, here we go, but turns out he was legitimate, but I was fearing the worst.

All i'd say to anyone is check your policies. Make sure you've got something in place to ensure you get what it's worth.

On the plus side, Direct Line sent me a Mini Cooper SD which has been most enjoyable - for a diesel.

Monaco Blue 172 soon to be available for parts

Sounds about right for a non-retail price for a stock 172.

Stock is slightly misleading though, it's not your average motor by any stretch.

How so, what makes it special compared to any other other maintained 172?
EDIT: Just realised I sound like a right C*** there. It's just a question, not a dig

But this is why I put "agreed value" on my cars where I can

Agreed value is only any use though if you can prove it will cost that to buy another surely? In which case you don't really need an agreed value unless its very rare surely?

Adrian Flux told me when I asked for agreed value on my old car that they didn't do it because if they agreed it at 10k but they could prove at the time you could get another for 7k you would not get your 10k.

At least yous are both ok though, it is only a car.

I'm with AF, it was a paid-option for the agreed value, but it may be just different underwriters. I had to back it up with a modification report and a ream of photos

Sorry to hear about the write off, £1885 doesn't seem too bad though tbh.

I bought my 182 2 years ago with fairly low mileage and a good list of mods for £1800.

With all respect, 182s are ten a penny lol (don't want to sound a c**t myself either! ;-) )
I've spent two days looking for a similar car and cannot get anywhere near what it's like. The car was immaculate and that's not an exaggeration. The only bad points I can think of (bear in mind I had a barely visible a car park ding pulled out such is my ocd) was that the alloys look awful, but as I said, they're ones that have just been put on for the winter.

Oh, well, I'll suck it up. Live and learn lol!

Sorry to hear about the write off mate but with all due respect ive owned both a 2002 low mileage 172 and now a 2005 low mileage 182 full fat and I can tell you the 182 is the better car to drive and look at plus its a few years younger

172's look booring in comparison to the 182 without that twin exhaust at the rear

You already have a car that requires a bit of work, but probably not that much.
Please put up some pics of rear damage/boot floor.
I`m sure any low speed rear end can be repaired for half the price of your payout,if you don`t start the estimate with a new bodyshell.

Which is why you want a 172 with the twin exhausts, Turinis and Cup spoiler ;). You also get a spare wheel, handy if you get a severe flat.

I know of one near me. Oh hang on...

A friend and his brother both own a 172 (with Eibachs and fresh Cup dampers) and 182 FF. He said out of the three cars (mine included) they all drive a little differently.

I'm 35 years old, I like the twin tail pipes, but I prefer the 172 because it looks a bit more discreet.

I had a Purple 4.5 V8 when i was in my mid twenties, I've done the loud and proud phase lol!

Ok, haha no need to say im joking... Yeah got to say hidden exhaust is best.

Glad I'm not alone.
I've potentially 'sourced' a low mileage 172 in Monaco and possibly not too far away. He was asking £2400, so may be up for a similar amount again (advert was taken down).
Fingers crossed something comes of it.

Offer seems fair imo. I got paid £1600 for my ph2 172 (100k on clocks) in 2013. Bought it back for £150, fixed for £300 (jigged the boot floor 'straight'). Got t'boned earlier this year, paid me another £1200, bought it back for £98, £135 to fix (new door, wing skirt).
The buy back prices are sometimes comical, but less that their recovery costs. Originally bought the car for circa £3k about 5yr ago, so fair to say I've had my money back.
You should be able to request a courtesy car for a couple of weeks at the third parties cost

Bloody hell, keep that up and, sooner or later, you'll have actually earnt money out of pranging the car.

Ha, I know. the latter accident was when my brother was using the car.
Still feel paranoid about being rear ended, that also happened when i was stationary at a crossing (as with the OP). Car isn't as mint as it once was, but its going down the 'track car' route anyway now

182 everytime for me (30 years old)
Shame some think the 182 pipes look chav
Must be same for the Golf R32 and mk6 Golf R owners then and even worse for the mk7 Golf R with 4 pipes 😂:yum:

Absolutely.

When you've got as many exhausts as you have cylinders.....FFS.
Also, it's all very well having massive tips to the system, but when the bulk of the pipework is the diameter of a drinking straw, what's the point.

Personally. unless you've got a V-engine or at least 5 cylinders, 1 tip only. But thats just my thoughts

Mk6 and mk7 Golf R both 4 cylinder mate 😂

Personal preference anyway a suppose but to me a debadged 172 could be mistaken for a 1.2 Dynamique 😊

Healthy banter :tonguewink::up:

yeah, the R-series dies for me when they junked the V6. The S4 Is just as bad. You dont need a pipe for each 500cc, you try hards!

And I totally agree, a debadged clio could be a 172 or a 1.172, and since all the 1.2 kids go bolting on bits of pre-broken 172 on their Clios anyway, it's not getting any easier

Same happened to my 182 last month. Minor rear end shunt and a creased boot floor. Just been told it's nearly £3000 in repairs and labour, so cat c write off. Still needs to be assessed by my insurers but the end result won't change. I've poured so much money into it recently for no return. They've offered £1910 for it. I might buy it back and get it repaired.

I tried to make this point last night, but it fell on deaf ears.I`m sure the OP would have happily paid £300 to replace a clutch replaced, but does not want to pay the same to have a few creases removed.
Any bodywork to the rear of the rear beam mounting points is just something to hang the bumper on.
A contract repair would have avoided the car being recorded as a cat c or D.

I think what people are worried about is selling a car with a marker on it.

The same people seem to forget that there are cars out there that have been hit badly and avoided the insurance marker as a result. Christ, I have done it once (with my Porsche 944 ; if it was on a agreed valuation I may have gone about it differently), my friend has done it twice at quite an impact to his wallet! I have however seen 'clean' non Cat D cars that have clearly seen a knock yet most people fail to notice it ; yes I did buy a 106 GTI that was HPI clear yet the inner wing had quite a crease on closer inspection, and the front was a royal palava to line up right, especially the side with the creased wing.

The guy that jigged it up for me used to be a cliocup mechanic when the 1*2's were in action. Had a good check over and said the rollcage helped. As you say the bumper only hangs on most of the rear. The bracket on the lower part of my bumper snapped - nowt a drill and some good old cable ties couldn't sort out to stop it wobbling around ;-) (ive made some ali plates to rivet on for a better quality repair btw #notcompletelypikey)

Selling a car with a marker is fine, you can tax it until its been inspected anyway. If the repair was poor then VOSA wouldn't give you a certificate. Most write off's are just because labour rates bump everything up, not necessarily parts (although I was surprised how much a new boot panel cost)
