Any advice welcome!

  BMW E46 330i Touring

Hi everyone,

Im new to the site and, despite owning a Fiesta Si currently, am looking to buy myself a Clio 172 Mk1 after Christmas has come and gone. Basically I love the crazy performance figures from a car that looks like it should be owned by your mum! However, a simply change of wheels and a little bit of lowering and the whole auto is transformed....

Anyway, Ive had a little research and Im hooked, I want it now! Was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations, comments, advice, etc... just to make my transition into French car ownership as smooth as possible!

Cheers!

Had a go of a 1.6 fiesta si a while ago. If thats all you have been driving be prepared to be scared sh*tless by the 172s performance :D

Welcome to cliosport!

I had a mk2 172 and swapped it for a 182.

Im now hooked on the formula :D

Welcome aboard.

Cheers guys! Yeah, Ive heard its a bit of an animal but Im ready for that next step up. Have done my time as a stupid driver and paid the price, so Im now a much more sensible driver, just want something that can happily embarass all the spotty Nova and Saxo boys when they think they can have me.

Because, more often than not, they actually can in my Si :(

I was tempted by the Williams and 16V a year or so ago but couldnt really afford insurance at the time cos I was running 2 cars. But now Im ready to commit to just the one, and it could be Renaults lucky day....

i wouldnt call the 172 a step up in performance from an Si! id call it more of a giant leap! Not that the festa is a bad car though

-or that the 172 is the quickest thing out there, not by a long shot, I have to try and remind myself of that each time I have a TT or CTR behind me so I dont start taking risks!!!

Would you say that the Si to a 172 is too big a leap for the average driver? I dont want to get in a position where Im frightened to drive the bloody thing!

No I think youll get used to it mate

I have gone from a 1.2 8v to a valver and i just take it easy and get to know the car.

Good luck

Tom

Cheers mate,

Yeah, as I said, Ive had my scares in the past and consider myself a very sensible, if not overly sensible driver now, but do want a bit more fun when the time is right. Im also doing quite a few motorway miles so, while I dont exactly want a comfy car, I do want something with more in reserve to make the trip up the M5 a bit more enjoyable!

Reckon Ive got a few months wait yet though, gotta safe a bit longer, survive Christmas and then have a think how much Im gonna need, sell my car, etc....

Good choice. Welcome to the world of French motoring - strange rattles behind the dashboard and untraceable electrical faults LOL and thats just the new ones!

I cant wait! I think part of the fun of French Motors are the rattles and bits and pieces that neede sorting....well, maybe. It creates a love / hate relationship that can never be broken!

I was thinking of going black or maybe blue and recreate something of a Williams ensemble. There are plenty of nice loking silver ones out there, but it seems that 3 out of every 4 172s I see are silver...
