Both the 172 and mk4 astra gsi? I used to have a 2.2 mk4 sri but i prefer the clio, although ive always liked the gsi's. Just been lookin at a few pics of them and really fancying one. Just wondering if anyone has owned the 2 cars and what their opinions are. ta.

i own a clio and my best pal owns a GSI dose that count lol

I used to have a mk4 Astra SRI Turbo, which a limited edition run of 500 released before the mk4 GSI - same car virtually except the GSI had more options, leather, switchable traction control etc.

I enjoyed it, comfortable, quick - turbo kicked in very nice really smooth.

But handling wise i was not as impressed, although it already had sport suspension from the factory it would have benefited from some decent coilovers. (then again thats the case with most cars!!)

But overall a good practical car, decent size boot, decent MPG depending how you drive it - very tunable engine to....easy enough to upgrade to a VXR turbo, remaps see big bhp.

I only sold mine due to a house move and i'm now running round in a ph 1 172 clio and will admit that i feel the clio is more of a drivers car than the Astra was - all depends what you want really.

But yeah good car imo.

My MK4 SRI turbo :( i actually do really miss it after finding out these pics.....i actually preferred the kit on the SRI turbo over the GSI...only mods on mine were tints, anthracite wheels, smoked rear lights.

Yeah my mate's got one of those SRi turbos! Not bad though I think hes chavved it up a bit :dapprove:

Always liked the GSi's myself... was tempted to get the 2.2 SRi at one point, interior let it down for me. But if I was going to downgrade I would certainly consider one, not the worst looking car around.

  Vectra SRi
if you're going down the astra route the gsi's the one to have, more power than the sri from the factory and a much nicer car! i had a play with one the other night, remapped with a vxr turbo and it was stupidly quick! do it! :D

  Monaco 172 + mk1 RSi
i dont have any pics but my mate has the best gsi i have ever seen and its a real fa**y magnet lol its been remapped, blue flame zorst and bits of other stuff and his mate has a 172 and when they both pull up the astra is just the car to have even if its only for the sound because it sounds amazing. also has a mint system from k and m acoustics, but yeah i know this may not help but if its looks and an awesome sound is what you want the gsi is the one for you lol

jamie

hope this helped

I really like the Astra GSi's.

I wouldnt say its quicker than a 1*2 though by any stretch of imagination.

I think its more whose quickest on the throttle first

  53 Clio's & counting
my bro has a 52 reg 2.2, and its a very nice car, to be honest performance i was disapointed with, as he used to own a 1.8 16v astra, then sold it to get the 2.2 and although the 2.2 is faster its not by a very big margin

though good on fuel and hadles ok, seems to corner nice and flat, but not to my taste

Identical 0-60 times on the GSi and 172 so would be a good race :approve:

Hopefully I'll be able to put my 182 against my mates SRi Turbo at some point (and shame him )

thanks for the input guys, thought the gsi would be a fair bit quicker but if not then ill prob stay with the clio for a while longer. only other option is, move GF in> sell both cars> use the money to buy impreza STI ive always fancied, but not a route i wanna be going down yet at such an early age!

Its still a gashtra at the end of the day.. however, if you were gonna get a gsi its easy to get more power out of it. E.g. a remap on a gsi would see you 25-30bhp, on your n/a clio you might get what, 5 if your lucky? Same with breathing mods etc, you might get 10bhp for each mod with an astra instead of 10bhp for the full set of breathers on an n/a engine.

The beauty of turbo tuneage.

love the mk4 astra gsi's the z20let provides a good base for tuning, finding one that isnt shagged is a nightmare tho :dapprove: was looking for one before i bought the cup! still wouldnt mind one. Vauxhall ftw:D

how old are you ? i had a uk300 at 24 and my insurance was only 800 with me and er indoors on it

I've owned a 182 and have currently got the Z20LET Astra SRi

Pros of Astra

- Smooth
- Quick throttle response in any gear
- No rattles
- Nice motorway cruiser
- Much quieter than the Clio
- MPG about the same TBH the Clio maybe a fraction better but not much in it.

Cons
- Handling not so good
- Don't feel like abusing it as much as my clio
- Not as much fun to drive

The main things I miss from my 182 is the ability to hoon it down country roads and feel comfortable in it, Astra doesn't handle bad but not a patch on the Clio.

Both about the same speed but once the turbos been "fiddled" with its obviously going to be quicker

Strange as it seems I do very much miss the Clio and I will be getting another Clio sport in the near future well either that or a Lotus :D

If you need practibility get the Astra if you want something that will put a smile on your face and size isnt a issue get the Clio :)

Not that I regret buying it though its a lovely piece of machinery

100% agree with you, i had the astra coupe turbo, stupid fast in a straight line (courtenay fettled;))but i couldnt make it handle! great engines, and overall good cars! mates got one hovering around 300bhp atm, absolutely flies, but i would rather have the clio because twisties in that thing are dangerous! nothing nothing nothing torque steer ditch oh feck lol!
