anyone using APEX springs

looking to get them on to the baby, for a quoted 40mm drop - anyone else using them? is so, what do you think of them? whats the drop like?

just got off the phone to dave at ktec, can get 35mm springs for about 45+vat, or he does a 55mm drop for (i think) 55+VAT. i asked him about the handling on the 55s, and he said it wont really change much, depends though on how many passengers youre carrying.

Also, i asked him if you would have put the torsion bar on 2 clicks for the 55mm drop, i was under the impression each click was roughtly 30-35mm. He says that 1click is 50-60mm!!!! therefore 2clicks and youre looking at way over 100mm!!! anyone who can confirm this?

so, aswell as the APEXs, anyone tried the KTECs?

cheers

1 click aint 50mm. Its more like 30mm. Ive got Apex springs and they do the job, quite firm but not solid like some others

are they good vfm in your opinion? do you have pics of your car with the springs on? oh, and have you still got standard scocks?

thats what i thought about the torsion bar!

what do you think which springs are better: apex or h&r? have you got any other sugestion? i have clio 1.4 16v dynamique

I would go for 60mm springs if I were you, I chose the 40mm Apex for my 1.2 16v and while theyre decent springs, offering good handling and excellent quality, theyre just not low enough for my tastes and Ill probably be going 60mm or coilovers in the next couple of months. I think P-i or Spax are the best of the 60s, not G-max or H&R. Bilstein are the best for a 35mm drop.

ICEman - yeah i agree my tastes are more witht he 60mm slam, but i cant afford to get the shocks that would be needed to do it properly, hence me getting the 40mms - as long as i can get rid of the gaping fat hole between the wing and rim, ill be happy (for now!)

look like 15s to me - yeah looks ok, i see what people mean about it not looking low enough, but i suppose its a trade off between looks and handling.

you still on the original shocks rik?

sh*t this is gettin harder - just went to sanspeed, just round the corner, and the bloke there will sell me a set of eibach prolines for £90, a quoted 35mm drop. they are progressive, what benR was talking about, and i know they are a good spring from the comments people have said!

but 35mm just aint that low is it?! are they even likely to get me a 35mm drop?

its eibach proline or apexs? what should i go for?!

The wheels are 15s with 195/45 tyres. To be honest to the untrained eye you probably wouldnt be able to tell that its been lowered. When I had the suspension done I was still running on the 13in steels and you could notice the difference, but when I put the alloys on that night it went back up the almost the standard ride height.

If your after the looks then go for the -60mm springs but if you want the best handling then -35mm progressively wound springs will be your best bet. Its your decision at the end of the day.

Rick

p.s You really should think about upgrading you shocks as well to get the best from your springs.

yeah i know, the thing is that ive gotta pay off my HUGe credit card bill before i go to uni and cant afford the shocks at the mo!

let me just get the facts right - correct me if im wrong:

# -60mm springs will knacker a shock pretty quickly

# you will get sh*t handling from -60mm springs - but how much difference will i notice?

# eibach -35mm springs will improve the handling of the car, the ride height will look standardish tho!

what to do!

You wont get sh*t handling from a 60mm drop but the ride will suffer, youll be able to feel every bump in the road. Ill see if I can find a side on pic of my car so you can get a better idea of the ride height.

and yeah, 60mm springs will kill your shocks, especially if theyre 8 years old.

OK people asking about different makes and stuff, with suspension as with everything, you get what you pay for. Basic rule of thumb is German gear = quality, UK budget gear =ok for the price but not great.

So in order of what Id want on my car just in terms of handling and quality of the setup (with the best setups likely to have actually been tested properly by the manufacturers):

1. Anything German - Bilstein, Eibach, H&R, KW etc

2. Anything Dutch - Koni

3. Anything British and relatively pricy with a decent guarantee - Gaz, Leda, Avo

3. Anything cheap and British or cheap and who knows where its from - PI, Apex, G-Max

it depends how much you want to spend, but I dont think youre ever going to be disappointed with anything from 1,2 or 3. However if your quest is for the ultimate drop then perhaps you can put up with dodgy handling, its up to each individual to decide really. Theres a reason why the bigger and better manufacturers dont offer huge drops in their catalogues, because theres an optimum drop and beyond that point the ride will get worse and sometimes dangerous.

In case youre wondering I use -35mm PI springs on the front and Koni adjustable shocks all round. Its a good setup. The PI springs are ok, I wouldnt go for a complete kit from them though, Id rather have a decent brand of dampers.

Apex is Dutch and its top quality stuff. They use it on a lot of Touring Cars, etc. It has genuine racing pedigree. So Id take it out of category 5!!! And Im not just being biased cos its what Ive got - Im planning on changing to Gaz anyay!!!

i thats cleared that up then! i reckon im gonna get the eibachs, i can cope with not having the most slammed motor about but i wanna keep it driveable, and from everyone ivspoken to they all say the ride gets so much better with these!

cheers for your help everyone, time to get the wallet out again...
