It’s in the 11.2 beta, which iirc has just had its 4th release, so hopefully it will be a general release soon.

More details please. What's annoying?? Nice to have an opinion from someone who's using one day in day out
Its just not convenient enough. Its fine in perfect conditions. It won't recognise your face if you have sunglasses on, it wont work when you're laying in bed resting on your pillow, but the main annoyance is....when it does fail to recognise your face it takes farrrr too long to get it to try and read your face again. You have to lock it and unlock it again or just stand there staring at it and wait. I mean were still only talking seconds, but thats seconds that don't really need to be there. With touch ID it was instant everytime. So its a little annoying at times. But saying that i wont trade the touch ID for the screen real estate. Maybe they could have had touch id on the rear like some of the nexus things.

Had mine since release and really Liking it. Only problem is when I’m half asleep and grab it from bedside table Face ID doesn’t recognise my half asleep face/distance I hold it away when still on charge.

Next on the list is a wireless charger...has anyone bought one? Any suggestions?

it will recognise you with sunglasses on, as long as you don't have the attention feature enabled, as for that it needs to see your eyes looking at it, So if you wear sunglasses often (you do know its pretty much winter now right? ;) ) you can turn that feature off.

Im very impressed so far, face ID works bette than I thought it would, and yes I've found situations where it doesn't work, like in bed, lying down with it in front of me, so certain angles, and its a little too quick to ask for the passcode if you've been handling it and it was trying to unlock using faceID but you didn't realise and so it times out and wants the passcode (like happened in the launch presentation I guess). But I don't miss the home button, it was just taking up space that it didn't need to, I expected to miss it, but the new gestures are just so natural.

Also loving the animojis, just a shame you need to use iMessage (who uses that any more????), thought they would crap, but pleasantly surprised.

Got a really really thing spigen case for it, not sure how it will save it from an impact yet, but its better than nothing to stop scratches and adds a bit more grip to a very slippery phone, and no extra bulk at all.

Not had a chance to try out the camera yet.

No it won’t. I have the attention feature turned off and had sunglasses on this week as I was in Cornwall where it was sunny funnily enough and it failed to recognise me once.

I have to agree mostly with @AdDaMan

At first I was surprised that it worked so well.

No I just get frustrated at having to wait for it. Then when it doesn't work having to wait ages for the manual option to pop up.

Like Touch ID's first generation. It was slow but by the time they released the second generation it was lightning quick.

It's not there yet and is the only negative about this phone.

Knew you'd agree. Dont see how you couldnt after living with it for a few weeks. When you are in the honeymoon period for the fisrt few days you will never car.
I'll tell you what i did notice though, i picked my mums 8+ to use when we were out with her and the screen looks like the difference between a macbook pro and a macbook pro retina compared to the X. Couldnt believe it!

Face ID working OK while wearing my sunglasses and they have very dark lenses. From reading around online it would appear that some sunglasses will work even with the attention feature active but others which are polarised will not.

Winter has no relevance to sunglasses. If anything, winter sun requires sunglasses even more, given the fact that the sun sits lower in the sky?
surely thats only when driving, but you won't be using your phone when driving?

I'm really not seeing people wearing sunglasses at the moment in the uk.......

if it doesn't work, just tilt the phone forward and then back again and it works, no need to wait ages, or turn the phone off and back on again with the side button.

£1000 for a phone, it should work flawlessly

I really think the worst part about face id is that you then have to swipe up on the phone anyway. Crazy.
I thought this would be a pain, but it really isn't, you just swipe up as you want to get in the phone (before you had to press a button) and faceID detects you and lets you in instantly (just like touchID before it), it really isn't the hassle I thought it would be, and is the same single action. FaceID isn't flawless, sometimes it doesn't detect you, or you aren't looking at it so have to remember to do that if you have the attention feature turned on, but for me it works 9 times out of 10.

You look at it and it unlocks. Then you have to swipe up to open the phone to the home screen
why don't you swipe up as you go to look at the screen, then it does both at the same time, its so fast to detect your face its barely noticeable theres a delay.

You really don't need to look at the phone, wait for the unlock icon and then swipe up, if you're doing this then you're doing it wrong!

You don’t need to press a button on any iphone, just raise to wake with your thumb on the sensor, or 1 press of the button if your not holding it conventionally. Doesn’t get any simpler, faceID just complicates these processes. The phone needed both to be completely secure imo.

A notch at the top and bottom would have solved this - still no buttons (because that’s super important)

that still only unlocks the phone, to get to the home screen you still need to press the button you're holding your thumb on, at least thats how it worked with my iPhone 7 plus.

faceID is no different, its a swipe instead of a press, no slower with my tests.

No you don’t.

Raise your phone with your thumb on the button and it will unlock

Yes it unlocks, but you still have to press it to get to an app surely, unless there’s a setting I didn’t have on.
If there’s an option then there must be the same option for the x, as faceid works the same as Touch ID.

I don’t know how to say this any different lol,

I pick up my phone with my thumb on the home button and the phone wakes to the lock screen when it’s raised and almost instantly unlocks to whatever I was looking at last, if it was the home screen then it’s the home screen, if it was an app it opens up to the app, either way the phone is ready to go and do whatever I want to do with it by the time I’ve picked it up and put it in front of my face.

There may be a setting I changed but I can almost guarantee that faceID isn’t as quick as me doing that (which 99% of the time I do, pull phone out of pockets, pick phone up from the sofa etc etc.)

It’s as quick.
I simply swipe up rather than having to get my finger on the home button, it’s a single action, exactly the same.
As I pick it up I swipe, I look st the phone (like you do) and as I do it unlocks and is at the home screen, it’s maybe a millisecond slower sometimes, but the action is so natural as it’s the same gesture you’re constantly using on the phone now as it’s how you get home.

I also like that when it’s on the table I can just touch the screen to wake it and see the notifications, and Leo if I want to click on a notification it’s quicker than Touch ID as I haven’t got to then move my finger and click on the button, faceid automatically logs me in from that single press.

I guarantee you it’s the current and the future.

Even on the iPhone 6 you don't have to press the home button to unlock it; just resting your thumb on the button works fine. Obviously on the iPhone 6 you don't have raise to wake so have to press the on/off button first but I'm just talking about the principle of unlocking via the home button :)

I don’t dispute faceID is the future what I’m saying is it should be there to compliment touchID not replace it

But you don’t need Touch ID any more, what function would it serve when faceid works?

Jaff.

You do because currently as seen in this thread recently faceID is flawed in certain circumstances where touchID isn’t.

Like I said, compliment not replace

dk

  911 GTS Cab
I disagree it’s flawed, Touch ID didn’t work 100% of the time, you had to get the right finger, and it wasn’t always positioned right. Yes it’s very good, but not flawless.

Ever tried to do Touch ID with wet hands, nearly impossible, I use my phone in the pool all the time, faceid is perfect for this, haven’t got to worry about my wet hands not letting me in with Touch ID.

It’s more secure.

I honestly dont miss Touch ID one little bit, and I was a big fan.
