Are exhaust heat-shields necessary?

  220 Trophy
As above, are these just for driver comfort (shielding the heat from entering in the car) or do they protect the bodywork or any gubbins? They’re a pain when working on the car (track car) and was just wondering about removing them completely. Thanks Mark

protects a few things on a road car that matter, like handbrake cables. Also the cat in the standard position is right under the gear linkage, the heat from this can effect the bushes and plasticise the grease. Track car with a decat......not so much

Thanks guys, I was just about to ask whether the gear linkage/ball-joint thing is ok with the extra heat and exposure to the elements, but I don't have a cat.

Didn't James have problems with heat affecting his gear change or was it more to do with it being relocated ?
