Are Remaps/Chips Bad For Cars?

  Mk4 XR3i 90 - spec
Does it put any stress on any other parts of the car?

It depends on the extent of the remap, the main reason for a remap is to gain more power, which obviously means more stress, but usually well within the tolerances of the engineering.

The type of engine, make of engine and fuel type all alter how much power you can extract safely without bricking the engine. The mapper should know the limits and stay well within them.

had my 182 chipped by superchips about 8-9 months back.not had any problems.the geezer plugged his laptop into some slot under the tray on the centre console, did some magic, put all my old settings on a new chip for me to keep and off he went.all a superchip does is push the engine components to work to maximum tolerances, which they should work at really but manufacturers like to tone them down a little.doesnt do any harm.

SRpm shoulnd't be increased as stock is high enough for warently.

As for fuela dn ignition maps (the only other bits chnaged) then they are set as an optimum for the car no point realy touching them unless the car has other bits done as the gains are so small IMO.

  E39 M5 & Corsa track
the gains are minimal on a stock engine, however drivability can be improved as can the lumpy idle.

id only really consider doing it if i changed cams had head work etc.... or if it was a turbo car
