ASAP - Need Network Help

just got a new computer and im trying to set up a network to transfer over files from my old comp to my new one

the old comp can see the new one and i can get files from it, but when i try and get on the old one through the new one it wont let me

ive shared a few folders and even the whole drive, whats going on !!??

its driving me up the wall and i need to get it sorted in basically less than an hour if possible

what windows ect does both pcs run , if worst comes to it set up a ftp n copy them that way

are they in the same workgroup?

yup, both WORKGROUP

i can see either from either computer, i can even access from files on the new one from the old one, but not files on the old one from the new one

i think it could be an issue with vista and xp. what settings have you got tunred on in the vista networking and sharing centre

ive adjusted what i can see to suit

its got to be a setting somewhere, as from the old pc i can get files from the new one perfectly fine

yeah vista is wierd though. took me ages to get vista and a mac to communicate lol.

what actually happens when you try to take files from the xp machine.

also as i havnt used xp for a while is there a setting like on vista where you need a password to get into the system

whats annoying is ive only 1 network card in each machine and no router etc in between so i keep having to unplug and start again to come online etc

im trying to get the error msg up so i can post it

it basically says i dont have permission to access

sound like something to do with a password or sommet. does your xp user account have a password?

actually thinking about it when i use to work on xp machines with a none ms firewall, think it was zone alarm at the time the IP address/gateway needed to be put in the safe zone/trusted zone.

i had turned the firewall stuff off

i think its my cable not working properly, its a bodged cable

hopefully getting a proper cable tomorrow morning if the post is ok

if you can see the drive/files whatever and you get a permisson error then I doubt that would be down to the cable

yea i know what your saying it doesnt sound right at all does it

well ive tried fiddling with it now and its not working as good as before

hopefully that cable will come tomorrow and i can have another go properly, as at the moment ive got crap everywhere trying to sort this out and im plugging things in and out and it probably hasnt set itself up properly
