Assigning USB keys specific drive letters

Is there any way of doing this so that you plug a usb key into a new device and it assigns it a letter specified in say an autorun.ini file on the drive.

Plug in pen drive.

Right click My computer.
Manage
Under storage, click Disk management
Right click chosen drive.
Select, Change drive letter and path.

Theres no way of doing it prior to plugging in the drive though afaik.

i have a data collection program i have to run from some shop floor panel PCs. They are on a private network so do not have access to write to our servers.

I've put this program on a usb stick and edited the config file so it writes the results to o:\ (the assigned drive letter) but i don't want to have to change the letter on every pc.

Right so,

Each of these shop floor PC's is locked down and is only able to access local drives?

Your program runs off of the pen drive and all your data needs to be saved back onto the pen drives? But your program is written to save data to O:\ which may not be the letter the pen-drive is assigned?

Is that correct?

What program is it you're hoping to use?

What's it written in?

What does it do?

What OS is this on?

What does it need to write to the drive?

Should be possible to force a drive letter, i'll look into it.

the program is some audit logging software, think its written in VB and just needs to write a small a2k, swb and aud file to somewhere.

The systems are running xp and 2000
