assisted cold air feed

Is this a daft idea... When stopped my IK sucks hot air obviously cos theres no air ramming up the cold air feed, So whats stopping me putting a small fan in the cold air pipe to push air over the filter constantly??

The constant air flow will keep away the nasty hot air in theory??



Any thoughts??

mmmm could be done but you would probably need a big fan like the one on the rad for it to work, heatsheild might be more effective but then again im not a chuffin engineer i aint got a clue!!!

wont work. some firms offer an electronic turbo which basically is the same idea.....doesnt work im afraid!

Why wouldnt it? It would be the same as cold feed after all? Anyway obviously the fan would need to be driven so youd have to sap power to gain power..not a whole lota point. Then you need the space for the fan to go. How about one of them battery powered ones you use for your face, strap it on with an elastic band and hey presto!

Just a little question? How much will the powergains of cold air benifit you while stationary? Will it make your engine rev louder? Because you cant go very fast if you are stationary!

What do you make of that Rob?

lol there is no benefit, in fact theres no point having a cold feed unless your doing 90mph+ which is why manufacturers just have there little sealed units. Filters make some lovely noises but theres no point spending a lot on them as its very minimal gains.

the fans would blow hardly any cold air in really, just get 100mm a cold air feed goin straight from your bumper into a sealed airbox. works a treat

Hi Paul,

Funny you should mention the idea. I was thinking along the very same lines myself. Im in the throws of constructing a cold air box for my 172 to house a K&N 57i. Originally I was planning to have two 50mm air pipes going into the box, one that was "force" fed from the front grill and another that takes air from internally below the headlight area. I was planning to put an in-line fan in the non-force fed pipe that was running all the time, so when you stop or are in slow traffic, cooler air is still being fed to the filter. I found a 12V 48mm inline fan in RS Components but they were looking for £70! So, kindo went off the idea. Im now running a 75mm Pipercross ramair pipe kit between the box and a cutout on the front grill (when DTs eventually get round to sending it that is!!)

Im not actually hoping for any performance gains!! As most of us will know it gets bloody hot under the bonnet and while your sat stationary the IK and associated bits are heating up, cant do the IK much good...

Those electric trubo thingys are a joke, although i know someone who had one on a mini and it really did work a treat!!! thats the only case ive heard of where they were any good though!?

While your stationary theres no cold air feed, so surely having a cold air fan cant doo any harm... as for power consumption dont know if anybodys seen the little model planes ducted fans they run on 12v and are bloody powerful.

Just a thought anyway! My thinking is that if the cold air pipe gets heated up while your sat in a jam or wherever then it will in turn heat up the cold air as it enters the pipe, cant do any goo really. probably!?

Fraid not, you would need a soddingly powerful fan to provide a nice constant breeze.

I have seen leccy turbos that can lift their own weight with so much force, but they still do nowt.

Won;t work. the cold air you get from a feed at 30mph will be colder than if you had a fan. Onlt any good while you are not moving. Then there is no need for it anyway.

Er, have a feeling a few people think i mean to force air into the engine, not quite the idea!?! But like i said the guy with the mini had one of those dodgy electric turbos and it did actually work, possibly the only one that did!!!!

I wasnt thinking anything quite that blue peter style...

Speaking to the bloke in the local garage he seems to think that the cold air fan isnt that daft, and that the cold air gently blowing up the pipe would mean that the hot air cant get near it. but says the problem with it is that the fan cant keep up when your at warp speed and the airs trying to spin the fan flat out, then it would hinder the cold air pipe.

if i were you mate i would position a cold air fan under the air filter which is connected to the engine, so in stationary traffic the fan blows the hot air away from the air filter, also you have a switch that controls the fan in the car, so when you are driving at a reasonable speed you turn off the fan and let the natural thing happen, i know its not what you really want but it may help the position on hot air staying away from the air filter and you control it.
