Awsome Broadband Speed!

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
Had a problem with mine just recently. Check out my stats ...

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 818 / 3,730

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 28.5 / 53.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 15.0 / 15.5

Had to have my SNR bumped up to 15 as the connection was dropping out every 45 secs or so. ADSL has been perfectly fine for 18 months on an SNR of 9.0 until last week.

Spoke to BT and guess what ... your line is perfectly fine, go back to your ISP. My ISP .... you need to contact BT.

Only other option is Virgin Media I guess but dont want to be on a 12 month contract as I might be moving soon and I dont think I can get cable there.

I just love being at work. And yes, it's even faster outside rush hours. :D

As for the original topic... Just as the few examples here, most of the ADSL-problems I've seen, have been caused by faulty/old cabling somewhere between the DSL-modem and the nearest DSLAM. Most often within the customer premises.

If I had a persistant and serious problem with my DSL-connection. I would start solving the problem by simply renewing ALL the telephone wiring and plugs that one could get a hold of and at least checking (preferably renewing) the wiring integrated to the structures of the apartment/building. Telephone cabling is relatively cheap to renew and an easy place to start debugging.

I have a feeling it's the ISP. I have a customer two doors down (so same exchange) and their internet is fine - smooth pings no packet loss etc (different ISP).

This looks like it points to wiring on the customers premises BUT I have a few customers on this ISP in Cornwall and Devon. Now all the Cornwall clients have awful pings and packet loss with this ISP yet the ones in Devon don't have a issue?

200MB up/down is mental! Can you actually max out the connection with rapidshare/ newsgroups etc?

On an 8mb line where we were told about 5mb was the maximum we could expect. Am going to get an IPlate soon and see if its any better.

I'm on o2 upto 8mb and get 5.2Mb/s download, great for £7.50 a month

10 Meg Virgin.

I'll have to see if I can get one from my mate on the other side of town. He's on Virgins test network. 200meg cable, seen him get 180-190 sustained. The b*****d.

Holy hell!

I get around 100ms ping at the moment which is just a hoot for online gaming... Speaking of which, does anyone have any ideas how to improve it? (without moving)

I'm on Orange and we can't get cable in the area. Once upon a time the ping was 30ms. Infact I remember the days of Counterstrike where ADSL would bag you a >10ms ping.
