Back right tyre noise

  Suzuki Ignis Sport
My back right tyre is very very noisy. Sounds a bit like the noise when the winds blowing hard through a vent and your sat indoors. Sounds flat or as if somethings catching. Nothing is catching and the tyres at 32psi. The noise is loudest around 40mph. It gets louder with speed but the engine noise drowns it out after 60mph.

Any ideas what it could be?

wheel bearing....

jack that corner up and put your hands at 3 and 9 on the tyre (using the clock lol) and wiggle the wheel,

do the same at 12 and 6

you will be able to feel excess movement

try spinning the wheel by hand aswell and if you listen carefully you will be able to hear the bearing 'grating'

I thought it would be, my mate's is making a noise too. How long can I go before having it done? How much will it cost? Cheers :)

will be a garage job mate unless you have a press handy, but shouldn't be too much... circa 60quid maybe less iirc (don't pay too much over that as I may be a little out), I'm due one on the front now after changing the driveshaft and it knackering the bearing :/

as for how long it will last I wouldn't like to say in case it f*cks up mate, mine has run 100 miles since I noticed the noise but I can't get mine done until the first...

best advice is to run it as little as possible until you can get it to the garage incase it does more damage and costs you more

That was meant to say, my mate thought it was the wheel bearing too. It's only started Wednesday and Ive covered over 150 miles since then. I thought it was just my two front tyres bedding in. £60 isn't too bad tbh! I can't get mine done until the 25th March (no pennies left!), I'll give local garage a call and get it priced up. Could anything else be damaged if I'm using it while the bearings knackered?

off the top of my head mate mainly the hub that houses the bearing as you are putting extra stress on the hub due to the bearing not working as it should be

and I'm in the exact same boat mate, splurged a bit on paint and mods this month and left a cushion to live off, only for my driveshaft on passengers side to knacker up 2 days later and set me back more than i was expecting for the part, then fitted it myself to find that I was a bit too rough with the bearing and it is now doing my head in.

get it priced up asap mate and get it booked in when you can and just limit your driving until then :)

might even be cheaper than I said as it is a 10 minute job on the rear (the front only takes longer due to all the extra bolts)

Ah right! I'm sure it'll be fine until I can get it sorted, won't do any major driving until then. Will keep the driving to a minimum :( Is yours 'humming' then? Is yours the front one then?

front passenger side (near side)

its 'hums'/'whirs' like a bmx wheel being spun too fast

and its humming loudly enough that I can hear it at 70 and distinguish between the bearing noise and the stainless steel cat-back exhaust (which is pretty loud) lol

only starts at 40 so hoping the next 200 miles in mine go okay tbh I need the car to get to and from un

It's a common fault on Clios. I've had two rear bearings replaced on the same side.

seems to be mate, I have replaced mine all way around and a couple of them twice, this front nearside one is the 3rd time it will have been replaced....

as asked though what is the max damage it can do running a worn bearing until payday?

It's £20 labour for the back wheel then whatever the wheel bearing is (probably another £20?). The wheel bearing is quite a clever piece of kit, just looking at the pictures on the Internet

Yeah, its not bad, has its flaws when it comes to reliability on these but I assume that's because they use cheap materials to make the bearings
