today i went to my local renault dealers and ordered the 172 sport badge for my 97 clio. but i cant decide whether to just move the clio badge up and have it as clio sport or leave the clio badge and move the renault badge so it is the same as the 172 cup??

i am due to have my boot re sprayed so i can have it all fitted properly so it look as good as the 172. when i get it sprayed i am thinking of getting rid off the central brake light on the boot and smoothing it off and buy a high level light to go at the top like most new cars. Do you think this would look okay?? Has anyone done it or got pics

If you do a search for a thread called "Fake 172... why pretend?" (or similar), lots of people voiced their opinions on re-badging cars to be something theyre not (ie putting the sport badge under renault so that it looks like a 172).

cheers face, well it made interesting reading!!

the main reason i want to put the badge on the back is cos i am moding the car to look better, alloys, lowered, ice etc and i thought the badge would make it look bit special. i know and nearly everyone will know its a 1.2 but if you read max power, you wil see that some cars will look the nuts but still only have a 1.0 or 1.2 under the lid. So im not trying to say look at my 2.0 sport cos it clearly isnt. at east im putting on the real 172 cup spor badge. Some monkeys i have seen put the 16v saxo badge on the back and as nice as th badge is..its made for the saxo and is clearly the saco badge. So at least i can say im putting on the genuine clio sport badge.

Miltage, lets face it, its your car, putting it on will make it look better, so the voice of opinion isnt going to win this one! its exactly what ive done to mine, and people can say what they like!.

Besides, if people are too concerned over a badge just what is the world coming to?!

Hang on a minute, are we talking about the badge that just says SPORT? If so, putting it on a car like mine wouldnt be a crime, as although mine isnt a 172, it is still a Renault Clio Sport, as labeled in the Brochure and all paperwork. From the back, there is little difference between the sport range and the boggo models, possibly a subtle spoiler, and I wouldnt have minded if Renault had added a badge to help differentiate them. If someone said here, have a free sport badge Id probably use it, but I doubt Id go out and buy one.

Agreed MC but at the risk of sounding like a smug git again,

adding a sport badge to your clio sport is acceptable (it is after all a clio sport), but not when its in the same font and in the same place as the above mentioned badge because this specific sport badge was only designed for the 172, V6 and Spider!

But, it is often very difficult to find any sort of tailgate lettering that complements the standard font already found on the rear of ones car. Ive seen many attemt thats been bought from halfords!

The Nova my friend and I have built used to get mistaken for a 2.0 16v all the time, so weve added 1.4 to the back, and were getting the rocker cover done to match so that all the oiks that look at it dont assume its a 2.0l.

Those of you who wanna make your car look special, how come you all just so happen to chose the word "Sport" if you dont want it to look like or badge it up to a 172? Surely if you want it to look special shouldnt you be looking at other words which Renault havent used becuase obviously you dont want it to look like just another Renault. Why not use:

JillyB, all im trying to say is that the word sport is not a distinguishing feature regarding speed, as it is widespread throughtout the motor trade, VW use GTI on cars that are pretty poor in the performance stakes.

I didnt put sport on my car for it to look like a 172, you only have to look at the rear bumper, the front of the car, the lack of skirts for signs.

The point im making is people in general will not have the common sense to symbolise sport with 2.0 16V, so will be none the wiser. Therefore those people in the know will immediately notice features on a car that are missing, so will know.

clear as mud! but the bottom line is IF EVERY clio had sport on it, you would still be able to notice a 172 out of the crowd.

I dont wish to annoy, upset, or offend anyone, this is a view which everyone on earth is entitled to.

Whilst on this subject, you may have seen a purple Saxo that was in Fast Car last year. Now this wasnt a VTR or a VTS but was a 1.4 Westcoast. Any way, the bloke in question lives near me and clearly had a moment of drunken madness when he had the back of his Westcoast smoothed and de-badged and stuck a COSWORTH badge on. Dont know about you, but it now scares the s*it out of me.

Dont know if this point has already been made, but the "Sport" badge that is on the back of the 172 is in the same font as the RenaultSport logo. The badge is only put on RenaultSport cars and thus denotes the car has been tinkered with by RS. It doesnt just denote that it is a car with sporting pretentions!

Rhys is right your all missing the point. The sport badge is not a seperate entity, it belongs to the badge above Renault, coz the car was developed, built and sold under the RenaultSport name!

Stick the sport badge on the other side, under clio.

That way you have a sport badge on your clio, and you wont be making it "look" like a RenaultSport Clio.

What I think is wrong is to put it under Renault and make it look like a RenaultSport. Which, whatever way you slice it, it aint. Simple as that. Defacto.

Dont dilute the RenaultSport brand. As ive said before, i dont have a V6 Clio, and I wouldnt put a V6 badge on my car. My car isnt a V6, so my car doesnt deserve a V6 badge.

gaj16v - ooh....good moral dilema question! I reckon yes, having the interior is okay as it is a functional part of the car designed for comfort. People are also unlikely to sit in a valver and think it is a 172 as they would see the car when they get in. I suppose if you made them close their eyes and then sat em in the car and told them to feel the seats and that they were in a 172 then that would be bad. So dont do it. Roit?

Not so hot on that idea myself. Im looking at it from the point of view that I wouldnt put a Williams badge on a 172, even though I think the Willy/16ver is an amazing car. People would throw eggs at me or something if I did that!
