Bath by Night (with Fireworks)

Gave the D90 a good high ISO workout this evening, had it in my bag and just grabbed it for some 'smash and grab' type shots whenever something interesting appeared (the sort of thing I like to do in the daytime), the beauty of this was that I could do the same in darkness as I could in the day without the need of a tripod, some of these are ISO1600 and still look really lovely viewed very large...

All Nikon D90, Nikon 50mm 1.8.

ISO1600, f3.2, 1/40

Thing I'm most impressed with is that the noise looks really natural, has a film grain look to it and imo doesn't take anything away from the pictures.

great shot, angles shot at that i wouldnt even think about doing.

such little noise at iso 800 what a brill camera ....

nice angles too

ISO800 seems to be the sweet spot for low light, not too much noise and what there is looks quite nice and grainy anyway.

The ISO3200 shot is the biggest surprise, as you might be able to tell from f1.8 and 1/30 that I still needed, it was pretty much acting as a night vision camera with those settings

Great selection of pics, really like the 5th and 7th!

I've just hired an 18-200 VR for my Paris trip this weekend, can't believe how tiny it is!

Bit slow compared to the 50mm but hopefully the VR will claw back a couple of stops. Never used VR so that will be interesting.

Its a good all round lens, and will be perfect for walking round a city with. It does nothing particularly well though, although the VR system works a treat.

Just got back, mightily impressed with the 18-200. Throws backgrounds out of focus nicely, and is probably as near to an all-round high quality lens for walking around as you are going to get. Certainly felt like I chose the right lens (rental was about £29 for a week iirc, I just got it for the weekend so it was a fair bit cheaper...http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/)

I was going to get a Sigma 50-150 2.8 as a high-spec walk around as it's pretty compact (with a Sigma 10-20 for wider stuff) but I'm having second-thoughts. The VR + the high ISO of the D90 was pretty amazing.
