Belts?

  Clio 182 Trophy #229
I bought my Clio 182 4 weeks ago. It has done 23,600 miles now (900 more than when i got it) and as far as i can tell it has only had the timing belt done on it. There is a lot of talk in adverts of both belts being done. Can someone enlighten me on the other belt that needs doing and when it is likely to need it doing?

  Clio 182 Trophy #229
Is the timing belt the Aux belt then? Also since it is a 54 plate even though it has only done 23,000 miles i should be getting the cambelt done?

Unless you have the receipts for the belts being done take it that they haven't been done.

I have a recipt here for "Full service and timing belt"

Full Timing Belt £120
Fan Belt £10
Spark Plugs £35
Air Filter £13
Oil Filter £5
Oil £26
Fuel Filter £9
Labour £200

Total: £418

Some of those parts seem a tad cheap.

Lol pretty lol-worthy since you don't replace the fuel filter on the 182. It's a life-item that sits in the tank...

Sounds like a bullshit receipt to me.

I have a recipt for the timing belt but i dont have one for the Cambelt. How much does a cambelt change cost ruffly?

Well thats good to know...... FFS. The guy really didnt seem like the kind of guy to lie about it being done, he was a a really nice bloke and about 60.
Is there any way of telling if it has been done or not?

  Clio 182 Trophy #229
Brilliant. I am pretty sure that has been done, the fuel filter thing does seem a bit wierd but apart from that it seems ok. I will ring the garage that did it maybe.
Any ideas how much a cambelt change is going to be?

  Clio 182 Trophy #229
Around £460-500 for Cambelt and Auxiliary belt.

For both doing? That isnt too bad i guess. I think i trust that the timing belt has been done, depending on how much of a price difference there is i might just get the Cambelt done.

Also make sure it has the correct NGK spark plugs. 1*2's won't run properly on anything else.

It seems to run perfectly and £35 sounds a lot for spark plugs so i would have thought it has the right ones. How do you check just in case? I asume it will say NGK on them somewhere?

Sounds like (from the reciept) that its had a cambelt kit fitted and an auxilary belt, they havent replaced the auxilary tensioners.

I'd probably be inclined to have the lot replaced so least you have piece of mind then.

  RB 182
As for the plugs whip one out, should NGK R written on them (i did mine at the weekend and pretty sure that was what was written on them)

Timing belt is the cambelt mate its just people say one or the other you have'nt had the Auxiliary belt done looking at the receipt, but i would still get both done if your not sure its been done you want the cambelt kit and auxiliary belt kit.

  Listerine & Poledo
s**t.

best get them done as well then.

ballpark costs on getting an aux-belt done? Can't be as bad as the Cam can it?

And it's the cam change where dephasers etc. get done isn't it.

I believe it was around £100 last time I looked for just the Aux belt. Probably less. Any monkey can do that job.

I am so confused now, what are the auxilary tensioners?

Cheers for that i will check.

NGK PFR6E-10 are the correct plugs, anything else should be binned.

Great, this is turning out to be expensive. I will have to get on out and check it.

So i just need the Aux belt doing?

Right so it is only £100 to get the Aux belt done? I think i will do that because it just appears to be the timing/Cambelt that has been done.

Just the aux belt no mention of it on receipt, if i was you go and see a specialist before you have any thing done show them the receipt they can have a look at the car and tell you whats best.

The best bit of advice you'll get.
There are specialists dotted all over the UK. Tell them you've bought a car that you want looked at for belts, plugs, general checkover.
They may charge a couple of hours of their time, maybe £100 but if they can confirm the cambelt has been changed and the timing is good, you've saved a fortune.
If not, you'll have a reliable list of things to do.

Sounds like sound advice to me, thanks. I just need to pin point a specialist now in the Yorkshire area. Hence my other thread.

Worth heading over to BTM in Birmingham. Depends what part of Yorkshire you are in I guess. Diamond Motors in Nottingham have a good reputation.
