Best laptop sub £500

  S2000
What would you suggest?

I just need to find the best possible spec laptop for £500 or £550 that is made by a company with a good reputation so that it's not going to be breaking etc.

i'd like a brand new car that can do 0-60 in under 4 seconds made by a reputable company so that it doesn't break down............;)

If ClioSport did laptops, they'd probably be the best laptops in the world.....

there's a couple of Toshiba or Compaq models around the £500 mark.

dont expect them to make the dinner though for that price...

I know it's not going to be the best around at that price, but I want to make sure I get the best I can for the money. I'll have a look at the sites above, thanks.

how come?

cause i dont agree with places with policies like if you've opened the box then no refund. a la dixons currys pc world

plus they aint necessarily the best prices, just people go there as it's what they know. Don't think the customer service is all that AND they never manage to get their prices right lol

lol, fair comments.

the returns policy can be overriden in each store, its up to the manager.

My store is very lax on returns... if a products open and we know we can re-sell it then we'll happily return it. We'll even repair any packaging damaged by the customer and return it still, even if its just unwanted :)

i still never understand why HP still us the Compaq brand for some retail laptops when every other mention of the brand has disappeared, its strange they kept it for retail when compaq was more a corporate brand for business's?

ive often wondered this... They only use the HP brand for their top of the range media centre machines now. All the rest are Compaq branded.

Thought I would bump this back for any more suggestions. Budget has now been bumped up to £600.

I'm considering a Dell laptop I saw in the paper though, THIS one. Although it's shown as £725 it would be £549 with the standard one year service package.

Actually, having had another look at that acer website rory put up - they seem much better than the dell prices.

Has anyone got any opinions on THIS laptop. It looks to be a really good spec, but I'm not sure of what sort of reputation NEC laptops have?

If anyone could let me know if they know anything about them it would be a massive help.
