What is the best PC security? Is there a really good free one or are these just okay? I have PC Cillin on my PC but its out of date and am thinking of getting a renewal at £35.Is this worth it?

The best is always debatable but this might interest you:

To get the FREEBIE which is a download with a full 12 months licence (worth £39.99 in the UK)......

1) Go To http://us.mcafee.com/root/campaign.asp?cid=53347
2) Enter coupon code VSPPROMOCF
3) Hit Checkout.
4) Remove any additional products that aren't required but may be added.
5) Just follow the instructions and download the program.

I've been running it since that was posted and it's working fine for me.

Find something that works better than that ;)

Been doing IT support for years, definately one of the best... :)

Best of all, it's FREE!!

NEVER get a piece of software that does anti virus, anti spyware and a firewall all in 1.

Always get a different piece of software for the job

RemoveIT for Anti Virus and Spyware

Spybot S&D for Spyware + Adware

Comodo Firewall for a Firewall

All free :)

AVG slowed my pc down and you could not set scan dates it decided when it wanted to scan. I use Avast now and its also free.

I use that. Eset Smart Security as it's now called. So far so good. I bought two licenses, one for me and one for my parents and neither of us have had any problems. Plus it has a much lower memory usage than Mcafee, Norton etc. both of which I ran for a while.

I've got AVAST on the laptop, as that's free, and I don't really surf much dodgy stuff on that!!

I use NOD32 anti-virus. Three legit licenses.

I don't use anything else other Vistas own shizzle, lashings of common sense and a router (and thus hardware firewall).

tbh everyone will just say whatever they are using is "best"

theres so many "good" ones out there, avg, kapersky, nod32, avast, all fine to use.

just dont touch norton or mcafee, both 100% tripe.

and never pay for one either.

Christ you really are angry. You strike me as the person who would use Norton.

Agreed, thats the best advice ive ever seen ANYONE give on this forum.

My perosnal choice (as its my personal im alowed to give my personal opinion on them) would be either Nod 32 (Not the complete bullshit suite either, ONLY the anti virus. OR AVG Free.

Fact of the matter is....they all do roughly the same s**t, aprat from Norton of Macafee, both of which seem to attract viruses aimed at corrupting the program in some way, and actually dont work atall to begin with.

+1 on Norton. It's the only anti virus I have personally witnessed visibly destroy frame rates in all games played on a PC on which it was installed. I'd rather have a few trojans TBH. far less impact on resources. Norton is an industry in its own right. Almost like a self fullfilling prophecy. Tripe.

Not anti-virus software, but I absolutely love Faronics Deep Freeze. Basically partitions your hard drive and protects the C drive where the operating system is. Everytime you reboot your system any nasty virus that may have got into it is removed. It's like setting a restore point every time you turn it on.

I've got Sophos antivirus software, but it's never been needed with Deep Freeze. There are bad points to Deep Freeze though - for example you need to turn it off temporarily if you want to intall anything permanently on the C: I can live with this though as my computer has been running as good as new since I've had it.

I use NOD32 as well. I think it's the best of all the AntiVirus programs I've tried. Little or no noticeable performance degradation when using it and it catches virii really well.
Firewall wise, any firewall is good providing it's properly configured.
ZoneAlarm is probably one of the easiest to configure for the novice user and is fairly secure out of the box.
For the advanced user / techie / geek, you would probably consider a hardware based firewall at the perimeter of your network too.
The best way of keeping your computer secure is to use common sense though.
Turn off all unnecessary services and features of your operating system, don't install software you don't trust, don't give your passwords out to random people, don't use simple passwords, etc...

best free software, that everyone i know uses is AVG. like JJ said.

I got a free trial with mcafee from my hsbc account. Not had any problems with that.
