Intel duo core is the best at the moment, you can get them cheap as chips these days to. If you only using for the net then you don`t need a fast chip, hope it helps. jamus

+1 3GB of RAM is a gd option because vista doesnt support 4GB yet iirc

what sort of prices would i be looking at paying and where is best to buy from?

depends if you just want a base unit or the whole shabang,

base units, your looking at around the £400+ mark with dual core or £550+ for quad core

try overclockers or ebuyer

Pretty much all versions of Vista are fine with 4GB. In fact, most versions (especially the 64-bit ones) support way beyond 4GB...

Windows XP32 had the issue with the 4GB limit as did the cut-down versions of Windows 2003 Server, like the Web Edition. Even that doesn't mean much in the real world. My PC has 4GB in it and is currently installed with Windows XP32. It works fine, too - not that it actually sees all of it. :)

He wants it just for netting and people are suggesting quad cores and 3-4gb ram?! What sort of netting do you guys do??? :S

I've got a 1.66ghz core 2 duo with 2gb ram and it's flawless for internet and office apps.

Got mine from www.acerdirect.co.uk and it was pretty cheap at the time too for the spec i got.

Lol - you're right. It is a bit overkill for simple netting! We've had a few of these at work recently...

Not the cheapest, nor the best out there. But they are a very good base unit for straight forward jobs.

If you want a cheapy, go into pc world (yes I know, I wouldn't normally either) and look at the managers specials, 18 months ago I bought a 3.4GHz dual core with 2Gb ram, 500Gb HD, DVD writer etc. for 280 quid. It was as new and hadn't even had windows registered - bargain.

what does the 3.4GHZ mean and how important is it ?

  Scirocco GT 2.0
3.4Ghz = processor speed, its important because it indicates how fast the PC will be able to perform tasks, 3.4Ghz Dual Core is more than enough for netting

Well, 3.4GHz would be the old Pentium D..

If you look at Dual Core CPU's now, you'll be looking at around 2.0GHz as a basic spec.. rising to around 2.4Ghz if you wanna spend a bit more.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
I got a Dell Latitude D620 with 2.33Ghz Core2Duo processor and 2GB RAM going for £400... Not a better buy out there TBH!

Pentium Hot-Oven. Loved my old Pentium D, thought it was s**t hot. Clocked it 400Mhz with only slight increase in temp of around 10 degrees!

I loved the clock speed wars, proper evil for Power consumption!!

My Mac is quad core, it performs superbly at everything especially handling large files with heavy going multiple applications open.
My powerbook is 1ghz single and is fine for all stuff on the web and for Photoshop CS, even after effects.

dual core means both cores run at the said ghz speed. so a dual core 3.4 will have two cores running at 3.4 EACH.
