Big brakes or uprated discs

  BMW 320d Sport

Im in the same dilemma. Id definitely go for big brakes if I was sure I wasnt ever gonna put my 15s back on for the track.

Ive been pondering this too, if I fit 17" wheels I can get 330mm discs in right?

I would like to get big discs with WillWood 4pots, but I dont want one piece discs, I want the two peice hub/rota ones, would I need to get the discs from someone such as AP Racing and then get custom made caliper mounts made up?

i wouldnt have thought you would get better braking mate unless your using a better caliper, in this situation

the kit you shown me on MSN only makes the discs bigger, and the surface area the pad actually contacts wont be any bigger

i definitely think, for the kit you are comparin, that the TarOx will be better
(discussed on MSN)

  BMW 320d Sport

Ahh but I asked this one a while back cos I thought that the contact area would be the same. But the difference is that because the point is further out and theres more circumference to go around you get a better mechanical advantage.

i would go for Grooved but it depends on how you drive all my cross drilled discs ive had have cracked
ive ordered a 325mm 4 pot disc set from high spec should stop me nicely
the 285mm ktec racing big disc conversion will fit behind the standard wheels as long as there phase 1 and then they only just fit

  mk2 172

also i would think bigger discs will stay cooler cos of more surface area to share the heat dissipation

I had the big brake conversion on my gt turbo (285mm) using the standard calipers and the difference was just amazing!well worth the extra cash compared to just uprated jobbies.

does anyone know if 285mm discs will fit behind williams alloys???

raider what exactly did you get done

for the record paul is comparing

TarOx G88 40 Groove with Race/Rally Pads - £245 inc fitting

and

HiSpec Big Disc Kit 285mm - £205

My other option is to go for the G88, if I get any other big brake job done I only want grooves, no drilling.

  Skoda Fabia vRS

so what are you gonna do then Nick, you have 18s dont you, so i assume you would be gettin quite a large conversion done

if you were keepin ur 15s on for track etc tho, which would you choose

  BMW 320d Sport

If I was definitely keeping 15s on all the time Id go for decent discs and pads. Tarox G88 with Ferodo DS 2000. If the bigger wheels are staying on all the time then its definitely got to be big disc conversion, no doubt about it.

My problem is I ride on the 18s most of the time but occasionally I will need the 15s. What do I do?

  Skoda Fabia vRS

you cry at the lack of choices to cover you perfectly

i.e NONE

sorry mate but your gonna have to go for one or the other aint u

tough choice

  BMW 320d Sport

Well there is one other option. If anyone makes a 285mm or 300mm conversion that will still fit inside phase 1 15s. The KTec one is drilled which I dont want and the Hi-Spec one looks like it would be too big for the 6.5x15 wheels.

  BMW 320d Sport

No, If I was keeping my 15s on all the time whats the point in trying to get bigger discs on? They wont go, at least AFAIK, so I ruled it out. If there is a big disc conversion that will go in behind phase 1 alloys then Im interested. But I just dont think there is. Or at least the absolute biggest you could go would be 285mm which would be skimming the inside of the wheel and if you ever crash it and it puts the wheel out, youre likely to take out the calipers as well and have brake fluid everywhere.

285mm is only 25mm bigger than standard, only half an inch further out for the calipers. It will make a difference but not as much as youd want for the money youre paying I dont think.

Rally design do a 285mm brake disk for the clio £149 including caliper brackets and cross drilled disks.
So another £35 for some mintex pads or what ever you like to use.
And these will fit a 15" wheels I am pretty sure as the 306 gti 6 runs 285mm disks on 15" wheels.

If you only go on a track evry now and then, jsut swap the brakes over. Youll want to bleed and reniew fluid regularly if you drive hard so its no big deal.

But then you want the best brakes for the track...

Run 16s on the track with the biggest brakes you can get on there

We have fitted our 285mm brake kit to several Clios now but only one had standard wheels. These were the phase 2 5 spoke wheels and we needed to use 8mm wheel spacers and longer wheel bolts to stop the caliper touching the wheel. We have had customers using aftermarket 15" wheels with no problems at all. We also have the kit fitted to our own 19 16v and the increase in braking force is significantly improved compared to the standard set up.

£245 for Tarox G88 fitted. Disks are 120 and pads 40 at Prima. Not to hard to fit either so that would save you 85 quid!!!!

  BMW 320d Sport

Well I dont want to mess about with spacers so really there are only two options. Get 300mm + disc conversion and never put my 15s on again. Or have little saucer-sized Tarox discs all the time even though my 15s dont go on very often.

Anyone wanna buy my phase 1s with Eagle F1 195/50/15?

  BMW 320d Sport

Yeah but I thrashed them on the track in France, looks like Im gonna have to get the outer rims diamond cut again.

  BMW 320d Sport

Well yeah you know how it is, Id been running around on them all round France, I wasnt gonna bring a spare set of 15s with me!

Anyway it was a good chance to try them out under harsh conditions and they stood up very well, no weird handling problems or scrub.
