Bioshock

  1.8 Civic EX
I think I mentioned in another thread that I picked this up (and Bioshock 2) a few weeks back when GAME when having some issues, for quite cheap.

I've been playing it for a while and I feel like I'm missing something. I've searched for a thread on here but there doesn't seem to be one specific to this game, but it has been mentioned loads with people saying how great it is/was.

Don't get me wrong, it's alright but I don't think I'd put it in my top list of favorite games. Maybe I'm not far enough into it yet.

Playing on the hardest setting and these bigdaddy things are proving quite tough, killed 5 so far I think (with several attempts, dieing and reloading save points), currenlty at a bit where I have to get a rose sample for some bird as the nutter has realeased some sort of gas to start killing all the trees. Is that still quite early in the game?

Any hints/tips for later on in the game or taking out these big daddies any easier? Grenade launcher seems to be my best bet at the minute as I've upgraded it at one of those upgrade point things, also shotgun with electric rounds seems to be quite handy on them.

It gets better as you get further into it mainly because of the story and the mental characters. Sander Cohen FTW.

Yeah it's a grower, don't expect it to grab you from the outset it's just brilliantly written and builds as the game progresses.

Played some of the first game on PC and really liked it, but quickly got bored. Too much dread, and not enough quality gunplay. Also too difficult. In a bad and annoying way.

Brilliant games. The only game is Bioshock, where I've played the demo and then been straight out and bought the game the next day!

Waiting for Bioshock Infinite!

Finished it tonight. Quite a lame ending tbh, still not quite sure what all the fuss is/was about. Gutted that you can't play through the game again but start with all the plasmids etc gained from the first play through. Got 800/1000 achievements in the one play through though which ain't bad, just not sure I can be arsed to play it all again to get the last few....

Loved the first one but played 10 minutes of the second one and decided it wasn't for me. Not sure why!?

I bought the two of them in a Steam sale.

Played a few hours of 1 and got bored. Never fired either of them up again. I'm pretty bored of generic SP shooters and was looking for something a little different. Bioshock is not it IMO.

I think I've been spoiled by the likes of STALKER and Skyrim.

Stalker that's an awful comparison and extremely bugged out, though it's more of a First Person RPG than Bioshock. Many people in here that played System Shock? Well Bioshock lacked many features which made System Shock 2 such a great game to begin with. Most of the RPG elements were removed including inventory etc. That said, I'm not sure how anyone can not like Bioshock, the graphics were amazing under the UT engine and some of the water effects and ambiance/atmosphere are top notch.

Definitely a refreshing change, the AI can be a little overwhelming at times and the enemies seem to molester you, sometimes in packs. Although it's supposed to mix in with the plot. If you make good use of all the mutation upgrades though the game shouldn't be too difficult. Don't understand how people can say they got bored before completing it, it's a massively more engrossing game than most of the tat out there. Bioshock 2 is more of the same and although not a bad game, doesn't deliver anything new other than to 'clunk out' the mechanic with your new character - can understand why people would of gotten tired of it that time round.

Wasn't really a direct comparison. Just making the point that games like STALKER and Skyrim, whatever you want to call them (FP RPG's sounds fair enough), have spoiled me for on-the-rails, linear SP FPS's. They just don't hold my interest anymore. I'd heard that the story in Bioshock was enough to overcome the same tired old style of gameplay. IMO, it wasn't.

Yeah, because there are literally tons of games set under water, where you can fix-up mini helicopter gun ships whilst throwing a tornado at someone and harvesting little girls lol.

I know you can't ever please everyone, but tbh if you could sit through Stalker you'd be prepared to watch paint dry! I think I clocked more hours trying to get it to run properly than I did playing it :(

Dress it up any way you like - It's still a fairly generic SP FPS in terms of gameplay. Off-hand I can't think of anything in there that hasn't been done to death before. Where that is the case you need to draw in the player through storyline, atmosphere and errr... "immersiveness". If that's a word. Bioshock didn't draw me in. It doesn't make it a bad game - Just a game that I didn't find interesting. The world it was set in didn't interest me. I didn't give a f**k. Compare that to HL2 for example, which from a gameplay perspective is actually inferior but, IMO, in terms of immersiveness is vastly, hugely superior.

Same with STALKER. Despite it's myriad of bugs (and lets face it, the game wasn't even close to being finished when they released it) it was hugely immersive. I was completely drawn in to that game universe. I lived and breathed it for a few weeks.

So in short pixelated grassy knolls, and a city scape do interest you, but a derelict under water city doesn't. Got ya ;). Stalker had a great concept behind it, hence why it was so anticipated, but it was too shockingly put together to give any real credit. Some of the indoor environments were brilliant, but they weren't enough to save it. As soon as THQ took over they removed massive chunks of the game including driving, just to get it released before the quarter was out. The expansion pack was much better simply because it worked!

Again I know it's not the same for everyone, but you can't despute Bioshock by saying it's same old, because it's really not. If it was you could probably discredit 99% of everything that's been released in the last 10 years.

I actually prefer linear style FPS's to be honest. Half Life 2 is the best game ever made. Openworld FPS's just seam to "overwhelming" for me and I lose interest.

It kind of is. It's a straight up shooter with the addition of the "magic" and the tech interfacing. Both of which have been done before. More than once.

Which isn't a problem as long as the storyline/atmosphere/universe draw you in. It didn't in Bioshock. Which is odd cos there's no doubt that it tries very hard to build up an atmosphere. It just didn't work for me. It's a subjective thing obviously cos STALKER totally hooked me. Despite the fact that it was half finished and broken.

It just goes to show how subjective these things are. If I was a game reviewer trying to be objective then there's no doubt that I'd score Bioshock higher than STALKER. But equally there's no doubt I'd be playing STALKER long after I'd uninstalled Bioshock.

I'm with Silent on this one, the fact it's a FPS does not make the aesthetic, environment, plot etc any less unique or brilliant. It's one of the best games I've played in years and I genuinely enjoyed it as much as the HL games which is saying something.

I'd be totally in agreement if you were handing out criticism of the likes of COD etc which take the same tried and tested aesthetics, locales and "bad guys" for you to fight against. As a single player prospect they are an utter bore and to have Bioshock come in and actually have time and effort spent on the single player experience rather than going the cop out route of pumping out a cookie cutter online FPS made a refreshing change.

One of the best games ever to grace the PC platform. Waaaaaay ahead of it's time - back in the days when Looking Glass Technologies could do no wrong.

D.

Well, seeing as I'm getting shouted down here I think I'm gonna have to go back and give Bioshock another go... ;)

Try and work out what I missed the first time round!
