Whats the best way of getting is off the car?

Shampoo and water !

Spot area's soak with a damp towel to loosen it, and then wipe with some Quick Detail spray.

Removing the etching/damage that may be left behind - a good polish.

Polish doesn't always remove it! - Then you've got to consider the damage to the clearcoat!

I think the seagulls around here are nuclear powered! After 5mins your paint is fooked!

New water based paints are rubbish seems to etch easily, but agreed sometimes a wet flat is needed.

just get a sponge with some soapy hot water, and rest the sponge on it for 10 minutes or so, then generally it'll wipe off with first wipe

Some bird poo just seems to bond like cement, my car had a bad etch mark on the bonnet when I got it and even after polishing it several times you can still see it faintly in there.

I carry a mf towel and some QD so I can wipe any off as soon as I notice it.
