Bit of a scare

Was driving up to my mates last night via the M60 and suddenly my steering wheel started shaking pretty violently. My 1st thoughts were "ffs what's broke now". Pulled over on the hard shoulder and investigated around the front wheels, never spotted anything so I thought I'd try the wheel nuts. 3 nuts on both front wheels were loose and when I say loose I mean I could turn them by hand. Pretty scary to think if a wheel had fell off doing motorway speeds. The locking wheels nuts were fine so I'm thinking someone has had ago at stealing them.

I had the same in my mini, nearly all of them were pretty much dropping off! Worrying because you could quite easily have been doing daft speed or bombing round a bend

Had this happen to me at Spa and luckly I got the car back to the pits and all nuts were loose apart from the locking nuts. I even checked them through out the day.

Sounds very much like someone has been at your wheels, I ain't very "car technical" if you like, but surely three nuts on each wheel can't just loosen themselves up all of a sudden?

If so, how?

Only explanation would be that I'd not tightened them up properly the last time I had the wheels off but I very much doubt it. Making sure the wheels nuts are tight is one of my pet things. I always check and always make sure they're tight.

Yeah it's very scary, if a wheel fell off on the motorway doing *cough* 70mph, it wouldn't have ended well.

happpened to me the other week, turned out my little brother had been helping me with the car, i asked him to put the wheels back and he "couldnt find the spanner thing so just tightened them up with his hands"! haha

Get some more locking nuts and put them opposite the ones you have so if someone does try to nick them, its twice as hard, and also, youll have 2 bolts which hopefully will be tight and not 3.

Just a thought though.

16 locking nuts all round!

How much fun would that be when you need to take a wheel off, hmmm lets see, which locking key do I need, lol!

  53 Clio's & counting
Go carefull there, locking buts shouldnt be as tight as regular nuts (90nm compared to 110nm from distant memory) and that means 2 bolts in each wheels are done up not quite as tight as normal ones, id stick to just one locking one per wheel

It's a good idea but I'll be extremely paranoid about them for a while now, so they'll be getting checked everytime I go out in the car. lol

Or when it goes in the garage for work,

Garage: Is the locking wheel nut key in the car
Car Owner: Yes all 4 keys are in the car
Garage: Eh?

PMSL! I did that on my Punto GT when the wheels were changed. Never did get them nicked, but every tyre place I went to got majorly fecked off!

Thats a little scary, as long as the nuts were tightened to the correct torque they shouldnt come undone due to the stretch in the threads. Someone must have deffo had a go at stealing your wheels.

As for locking wheels nuts, you can buy a kit from halfrauds now to break them off, wtf is the point in that.

Yeah, completely defeats the object of having locking nuts really.

Only place it could have happened was when I was parked up at ECP in Trafford Park, was parked for quite a while as I was waiting for a part. Incidently there was an 08 plate 197 parked next to me when I came out, maybe it was him/her and decide to try and swap wheels :clown: lol
