Blu Ray DVDs

  200 Gordini
Anyone else addicted to buying them?

Do you prefer spending the extra money for Blu Ray compared to the normal DVDs?

What makes you buy a Blu Ray over the standard DVD considering the quite low prices of the standard dvd?

its simple really, i have a blu-ray player so why would i buy inferior dvd's now, waste of money really, just like i don't buy ps2+1 games when I have a PS3.

I'm not addicted though, only buy the films that are worth getting on blu-ray, i wouldn't buy a comedy on blu-ray for instance.

Exactly why I only have 2 BD's ;) Pirating DVD FTW ;)

PS: Batman was the one I couldn't resist LOL, The other one was FREE

I used to be like that with DVD's. I had hundreds and loads still sealed. Some of which are sealed still now.

I just bother buying them anymore. Ive got 200 films in data format, which are free. If theyre crap I delete them, if I never watch it again, it doesnt matter.

Im tempted by a BR player but then I'll go back to paying £15 for an average film that i'll watch once.

Maybe I'll just buy a player, Batman and Iron Man and leave it like that! lol

I like buying dvds especially when the older ones are like £3 from tesco, got a bit of a collection now.

Bought 4 blu rays on friday, although they're not the best examples of blu rays i think im going to be spending alot of money on them now

i just watched bladerunner final cut on my dad's s350 in dolby true HD 24p on a 40" 1080p and tbh it doesn't get much better than that, picture and sound are sooooo good.

I got Dark Knight for Xmas and its awesome, and i have bought a couple of my favourites like Con Air and Gone in 60 seconds.

Are all Blu Rays graded on output quality (i.e. are some better quality than others)?

Black hawk down, never seen it.. shall i get it on blu ray or the £3 jobby?
its quite a grainy film so depends if that would bother you, its not the best example of bluray but the hd sound is awesome.

Ive noticed that alot of older upscaled films dont have a great improvement, like predator, even casino royale seems grainy compared to the dark knight to me.
Got new 1080p tele yesterday, so ive been watching all my blurays again:) even coyote ugly;)

I got preditor on bluray a thew weeks ago and it crap, just like watching a doovd. If you got on doovd already don't bother with bluray.Transformers is superd,a deffinate must.

Before you buy a bluray film you should check the writes up of the film quality first on play.com,as said above somewhere some films are better than others and some are no different too watching on doovd. They are too expensive too buy only too be dissapointed with the picture,it happened too me on a thew films.

Is there no "quality grade" listed on the the back of the box (I'm sure I heard this somewhere before :S)?

they aren't upscaled, if anything they are downscaled.

The original print they are taken from is normally at a higher resolution than blu-ray is, it just depends on the quality of the original and how well its faired over the years.

Some films are re-mastered too which helps clean up the image, but if you want a perfect example of what I mean then get bladerunner, from 1982 and it looks like a film made last year, it really is that good, top gun too, thats the same.

The reason some films look worse than others can sometimes be the post processing of the film, some film makers add grain in afterwards, i'm not a particular fan of this but it can be seen in films like 300 and miami vice.

Dark Knight on BD is excellent, I bought the Batman Begins and DK double set yesterday. The picture quality is stunning, best I've seen yet.

I know of several people who have bought a BD player for Chrimbo, the format appears to be increasing in popularity.

I thought "There will be blood" was immence on blu ray to be honest. the sound was very good but visuals were well up there.

epic film

It's quite simple. If you have a Bluray capable player, then buying a DVD instead of the BD means you're so skint you couldn't afford the BD player in the first place.

Wall-E & Transformers are stunning examples of 1080p/24. I swear it was REAL :D I also really enjoyed I Am Legend, but the ransfer wasn't the best. Very poor contrast. So, of course the quality of transfers will vary, just like it did with VHS & DVD, or whatever format comes next :)

Band of Brothers on BluRay is epic. It's the only 'movie' that I've bought on BD even though I already had the DVD.

BluRay FTW. Upscaled DVDs look good too, but only a spanner would choose a DVD over BD if they've already bought a player :)

RE: 1080p x264, I agree, but;

Most material available on the internets is 720p. There are lots of 1080p movies, but they're huge file sizes (20GB+) which means that even with a fast connection, you're at best, going to have to buy a LOT of hard drives very qucikly. BD is a nice convenient format. Slap it in, crack open a can and enjoy.

I've personally experienced a lot of 'downloaded' HD content and yes it looks great, but for a movie collector who doesn't mind paying for the creative works he likes to watch, BD is the way forward :)

It is a VERY good movie. Creative genius from these boys. Again. The cement is a brilliantly told story. Again.

12/10 for me. Lots for everyone to enjoy. Amazing visuals, stunning creative imagination, and a heart warming story :approve:
