Book value for a valver

It’s just been pointed out to me that, if my new door is going to cost about £750 to repair using new parts (the bloke won’t be happy when I show him the quotes! lol) then it’s getting dangerously close to costing 60-odd% of the value of the whole car (assuming the book value is as little as I fear it is) – which is write-off time if I remember correctly…

What’s an M-plate valver in good condition with 104k on the clock worth according to the trade? Anyone have a Glass’s guide or work at an insurance company?

ok, http://www.autotrader.co.ukwww.autotrader.co.uk says:

Dealer

£2,314

Private

£1,878

Part Ex

£1,155

Trade

£1,085

Cost New

£13,280

Supermini with a big-car feel. Excellent ride, good range of engines and a stylish interior, but poor driving position and questionable build quality. Design now ageing but still lively and appealing.

Suspension and brakes cause most headaches. Auto boxes can die after 50k miles. Three-yearly cambelt change needed or engine can fail.

Well, hopefully they wont write the bloody thing off if it does have to go through the insurance!

  don't

ouch thats a nice big price lol

that for a new door or what??

he will prob say hell find u door cheaper himself but dont let him, insurance wont write it off, is that the cheapest or most expensive uve been quoted or what?

How come it costs so much to repair? The damage didnt look that bad! Well, hopefully they wont write it off but if they do and you decide to break it up, could you PM me please - I have a white valver and could be interested in some parts!!

Oh, and by the way its worth what someone will pay for it, and seeing as 16vs seem to have a good following I would expect it to sell for higher than book value

I dont like looking at those prices, you sudenly realsise that selling it wouldnt be a good option, youd only get peanuts for it if you go via those prices!!!

Yep, it is bad to look at how much youd get to sell! The good thing is that its a good market to buy in if youre looking for one!

The £750 quote breaks down into the following:

£175-200 for a new door, £25-30 for the side moulding, £14 for the 16v badge, £75 for the door mirror, £25 for the black-sticker-thing between the side windows, £29 for an "impact kit"(?) = roughly £340 for parts, with £100-ish for paint and £205-210 for labour, all with VAT on top...

I know I could get a 2nd hand door for about £50 but its still got to be sprayed etc, plus how would I know it wasnt full of rust and parking dings?

I get the feeling he wont be happy but Im going to have to insist and be tough. (for once! lol) If he gets sh!tty then Im just going to say that Ill have to go to the police if he wont go through the insurance. Hes got about 50years NCB anyway, so his premium must only be about £100, especially on a J-plate Rover 216GTi!

Thats steep.

Like others have said get a second hand door. As long as theres no rust itll be ok. Parking dings can be removed for £40 a panel. Then get it painted and swap your bits over. Clio doors are easy to come by.

hmm, well spotted...

Are phase 1 doors the same as phase 2 though? And will all the internal and external fittings just transfer over??

Im also concerned that the colour wont be a good match! lol

Fussy? Me? :p

I would think the door would be the same as people exchanges bump strips between the phases without problems. Colour wise id expect it to be ok - if not a t-cut should bring them closer. Will just depend on the condition of yours and the condition of infinicars one.

Just thought Id let you know ...

one thing that most people dont know is that you can insist your insurance company fix your car even if its economically unviable. At the end of the day your insurance is there to cover any damage. I did £1600 damage to my 16v in parts alone a few months back but managed to get my insurance co to pay up!:D
