Borrow/hire locking tools.

  172, Tiguan
I'm on the verge of buying the bloody things, but just wondered if anyone with a set fancies earning a few quid and letting me hire some, or even borrow?

I'll love you loads!

Fred, down in Sussex this week, then Durham next. Depends if you have a spare set that you can do without for a few days/weeks (whatever works best)...

... However Sash if your dad has them then bingo. For the f4r right?

Will check in the morning, and let you know is that ok? He's asleep right now lol.

Cheers guys, yeah can go past yours anytime Fred really. Didn't realise the pulleys had to come off to get cam cover off to get head off.... Removed all the cam cover bolts, cut the belt and now can't undo the pulleys. Lol.

Will let you know.

Sash, yes please - can you text me in morn?

You live you learn I guess. Cover bolts all back on and the belt was coming off anyway as this head is going on other block. Just need to lock the cams to undo the pulleys now. Stupid design!

if you're stripping it, just wrap the old belt round the pulley and twist it tight then hold it tight while you undo the bolt and nut. put the pistons at half stroke to avoid bent valves

We tried that mate but the engine is still in situ and I've not pulled the belt all the way out so there wasn't enough slack.

Pulley tool Fred? For the dephaser?

You'd cringe if you saw how we're planning to get that off. Lol! (just need to find the right sized bolt. Hah)

you need to hold the pulleys with more than just the cam location horseshoe (belt tension is actually enough) or you're risking damaging the slots in the cams. They're not meant to be load bearing at all.

you'll need this tool to hold the pulleys still.

I have an old one spare that you could borrow for a bit, dont have a spare horse shoe but you shouldn't need that really if you're not doing the timing yourself when it goes back together

Thanks chap, might well take you up on that pending Sash letting me know tomorrow, as she's local.

Had someone else pm and offer to hire the tools as well so all appreciated.

Is the dephaser tool just like a male socket? (if that makes sense!)

Think he means the 14mm hex socket Danny. I used a sump plug that I found in to open the dephaser end seal plug Jon

Not sure if yours is the same as the 182, but the exhaust pulley also needs removing to get the rocker off. The guy who removed mine said they vary on the earlier sports (not sure if this is true). He cocked up and managed to get the pulley off with just the locking tool (no belt). Good luck though :)

Thanks mate that's exactly the situation we're in - and i'm hoping the locking tool alone will be sufficient. Just could do with getting hold of one thats all.

Thanks on the sump plug trick, will try that.

So, you're all saying we don't need to remove the dephaser to get the rocker off, just the other pulley? Grand.

I've a feeling you need to take both off, as i'm sure the rocker sits in both, but could be wrong.

you need to slacken the dephaser regardless because you need the pulleys loose to get the timing spot on when you put it back together.

Hiring/borrowing a full set now Fred so should all be sorted soon (fingers crossed).

Hold fire for my next thread with rediculous questions (which will likely include q's about torque settings. :D )
