Broken alternator pulley

  Clio 172
Hi,

Anyone know if the alternator pulley on a ph2 172 can be replaced without needing a whole new alternator?

I know Renault don't supply it but wondered if a Citroen/Peugeot part would match? I'm trying to drive it as little as possible (in case it goes and takes the cambelt with it) but don't want to have to pay £350 to have the whole thing replaced.

Cheers

Is it a free wheeling pulley on these alternators? I can't remember. If so and they are available seperatly then they should be able to be changed. If not your looking at a new alternator.

I think it's free wheeling. The garage that said they might be able to match it also said it isn't a massive risk to drive it...it's been making a noise for about six months though so I've probably already pushed my luck with it.

Sounds like I'm going to have to pay out £350!

I'll check at work tomorrow see if a free wheeling pulley is available, and i'll report back tomorrow night. If not, then you'll need a new alternator.

i have a spare altenator if you are after one , of a 2002 clio 172 with air con, you could have for £45 posted if u wanted , in good working order

Its a big risk to drive it. If it fails and the belt comes off then theres 99% chance you will be saying bye bye to your engine

...and I've already had that happen once when the PS pump seized...had to have all 16v replaced!!

Nick..I may well take you up on the offer, will see what Maynard says tomorrow first though

Cheers for the quick replies

f4r 730 / 736 engines (172's) don't appear to have a seperate free wheeling pulley listed, so it looks like you may have to buy a new alternator.

bigrich - alternator £130, aux belt £15, labour £180 (2.8hrs)....a french car specialist wanted £400 and renault (typically) wanted £526!!

Thanks for looking Maynard, looks like Nick's £45 jobby is the way forward

Cheers for everyone's help

Yeah 99 times out of 100 if the alternator belt goes it will whip off and take the cam belt out with it at the same time. Which is just not good. On sport models, it's quite a tight set up but the same rules apply across all cars. It's not something you want to happen anyways.
