Broken laptop sale advice...

I have a two year old laptop which has a few small problems, but since it broke half way through writing my dissertation i never got around to fixing it and just got another.

I was wondering if it was worth fixing it myself, and then selling as repaired or just sellling it with the faults listed?

Any advice from anyone thats either fixed and sold laptops, or sold faulty ones, would be greatley appreciated...

For those who are interested, the laptop is a Toshiba Pro A100, 2.0 core2 duo, 1 gb of ram, wireless, bluetooth etc, running XP.

The problems are:

  • Doesnt charge properly, have to move cable around all over the place (pretty sure if i take it apart and tighten it up it'll be fine)
  • As laptop gets hotter, when pressing the top keys, occasionally a number is pressed too, i.e "t" sometimes presses "5"
  • Battery life is pants

Repairing the charging ports isn't just a matter of tightening anything up, it normally means installing a new one. £30 for the part - looking at the repair guide the port just clips in to the mainboard on the A100.

The keyboard sounds like it may have a short when it gets hot, a replacement part will cost under £10 but will cost around £40+ for fitting if you don't know how to fit them.

A new battery will cost you around £20.

Price up the repairs and decide if it is worth fixing, you should get around 60% of the value for a spare/repair system.

I can see whats wrong with the charger, and i've already fixed it a little from outside the laptop (its just a bad connection), i'm pretty handy and have already completely took apart a few laptops and reassembled them to fix things like fans etc. I am gonna replace the keyboard, but the battery, i may just sell it as it is, its fine to use if your willing to plug it in, if the new owner wants to do that thats fine.

Cheers for the advice on how much i'd get if i were to sell un fixed.

Its the piece inside the laptop thats broke, its not broke as such, just not connecting right, just need to create a better metal on metal connection when plugging the lead in. New keyboard it is then...
