Browser extension for blocking webpage extras like JavaScript?

I've got a Macbook Pro 2013, so getting on a bit now, but still going pretty strong. One thing that's slightly irritating these days though is that certain websites seem to get the fans spinning much louder than normal. CPU doesn't seem to spike much higher, but a bit of research, people were suggesting it's because certain webpages are always trying to load extra stuff continually, like JavaScript etc.

One site that I have issues with is Twitch.tv. It's obviously video, so maybe expect it to work fans harder, but I have no problems with YouTube, so maybe it's just not as well optimized or maybe it's because Twitch is trying to do other s**t in the background.

I saw some suggestions about using extensions to block these extras? Anyone know of an extension, preferably for Chrome that does this sort of thing? Is it possible to have video play but stop just about everything else on the page?

TIA.

I always found chrome to be awful on my old MacBook, have you tried a different browser?

Also, is there nothing for Twitch in the app store?

NoScript:

It's pretty granular but by default basically all websites break massively and you spend ages trying to figure out which scripts are required for the site, and which for tracking / ads.

I gave up with it in the end and just used a PiHole.
