Buying a car without a present V5....

  Lots of Alfas
Ive just brought a 172 from a private seller but he does not have the V5 yet as its just had its private plate took off, is it ok to go ahead and collect the car and he will send me the v5 when he gets it from the dvla?

He has offered the 'supplement' that he has when he sent it off.

No V5!!!!!!!!!

Walk away, better to be safe than sorry.

Or if you want the car, leave a small deposit & wait for V5 to show.

If you have no V5, the car isn't yours, i'd wait for the V5 to appear before taking away, leave a cheque as deposit as as you can cancel that.

I did exactly this when I bought the DC5.

I was more than happy to take the car without the V5 as I had a reciept & the people were very genuine.

Depends on the people envolved etc

^^^ yep it does.

But would you trust a total stranger with £7k of your hard earned because they "looked ok"?

You hand over the cash, take the car with no V5. You apply for a V5 and find out it's stolen. The rozzers take the car back and you're left with f*** all.

From a dealership maybe, but on a private sale? No way!

Yeah but all you gotta do is HPI the car before you buy it? Then you know its not stolen?

better to wait than to get a knock at the door a couple of days from now from the bobby's saying that their taking the car as it's not your's. Especially when change of reg is the cause..... you have no reference to check against the database, the Vin's could have been changed etc - you can't cross reference them.

If their selling with no V5 they'll be cool with the wait, if they aint - run a mile!!

YOU obviously have not HPI'd a car recently as part of the check is the V5!!!

They need issue date & other info off the V5, otherwise they will tell you they 'advise' not to buy it.

@ present there are 000's of dodgey V5's out there, but DO it!!!

The next post from 'dave' will be 'the rossers came round & took my car what do i do'.........................................

I handed over more than double that.

I knew where they lived & they were genuine people. As I said every situation is different.

Cheers for the replies guys, I called him this morning, he now has the retention certificate the dvla sent him along with a replacement tax disk and mot certificate with the new reg on, im guessing they wouldnt issue them if the car was stolen. I have a signed reciept from him saying i paid for the car and I have checked the sig by asking him for id (lol). He seems very genuine but I agree with whats been mentioned above about you cant trust a stranger with your money. However he had the car hpi'd when he brought it and I have seen this report with his name on it, its taking a risk but im collecting it in a hour.

this is what happened when i sold my car on the forum. should be fine.

has taken 3-4weeks for my V5 to come back. so if you dont hear anything from him in that time scale i'd say its perfectly normal.
