it is generally more expensive when it goes wrong, as agreed by yourself there is generally a delay somewhere in the throttle position yours i beleive happens to be at idle?

Throttles cables are generally reputed to give the driver more 'feel' for the mechanical control of the position of the throttle itself. To achieve this 'feel for throttle' though you need to be dedicated to the car and have ultra thin soled shoes on so that all the feedback comes through the pedal box. A good acquainted driver should be able to 'feel' the position of the mechanical place of the throttle of his / her car. In the same way that he /she knows when the pads are just skimming the discs when applying braking pressure.

FBW are just as reliable (if not more) but the general concensus is that throttle cables are more driver feedback related. However they wont be around forever and FBW is def here to stay!

Finally something resembling a quantifiable reply!! The delay happens when in neutral and blipping the throttle, or at least it did until I had my grpN ECU fitted. Now it's completely instantaneous - The GrpN ECU is programmed to open the throttle as quick as possible.

Cables throttles have all but disappeared already. In fact, when I was looking for a car last time round, the mk1 172 (which was advertised with a picture of a phase 2  ) was the only car I drove with a cable (think MCS and CTR are FBW too).

I'm pretty sure that most people just jump on the bandwagon with these things, trying to make themselves look like something they are not. Whilst becoming dedicated to my car and wearing thin soled shoes sounds very appealing, i think it's a bit much for the drive to work. ;)

god you guys must be bored, i suppose someone has to start an argument on who is quickest seeing as the mk1 bous have proved their point, cant wait for the 197 to come out and owners sign up here and see what more bullshit i have to keep me entertained

Is there an argument on here about which car is quickest? Nope.

All i see in this thread is a bit of banter and a discussion on the benefits of cable throttles.

There is bugger all to do on this forum these days except wind each other up.

It's all good, as long as nobody gets hurt.

Mr Lout...

Just to say that I did have a knocking that I struggled to get rid of but it turned out to be two problems:

Some idiot hadn't screwed my gearbox in properly and it fell out and

My K-tech exhaust was really badly fitted (still is actually) and was knocking of the sub frame.

Other than that, I have no knocking nosie on the car. A few rattles maybe but don't we all.

Having driven Dansta's cup a lot, I will say the FBW delay is noticeable and pull aways are an arse in his but something under his bonnent makes his car fractionally faster than mine. Then his is a cup and we know there are faster, he'd no doubt leave a full fat MkII looking like it was going backwards! ;)

Back to the original post lol Shibber both my fod lights steamed up looked like it had been doing it for a while as the silver inside had started peeling off and didnt look to good so i bought some new fogs and sealed them up with eletricians tape and they havnt steamed up since,

i get to drive the mk1 and mk2 172 as my dad owns a mk2 and there is no difference between the FBW and the cable thats just my opinion.

ive not had this problem fella, but the best thing to do is take them out, dry them out again, and seal them at the back, with black electricians tape or something like that.

You really want to seal it with some silicon or similar... be careful with it and let it dry before u put it back in the car!

I stnad corrected then mate. Knew you'd had problems, but never got to hear of the cause. And and as far as I'm concerned the majority of cars that suffer from the knocking suspension seem to be 182's... but that's a whole new can of worms. lol. :quiet: Never had a problem with mine.

Oh and that little thing under the bonnet that makes his faster than yours could be the gearbox. The changed the ratios to compensate for the increase in weight in the ph2 172 to keep the in gear acceleration times similar.

Of course the Cup has no such weight disadvantage and has the slightly shorter gears... just a thought. Either that or it's the magic 'Cup' dust they sprinkled on them at the factory ;)

Having driven both his and mine on many seperate ocassions, I borrow the cup when Dansta's at work, I can say there is nothing in it overall, although his cup is ultimatly faster but not by enough to eliminate driver skills/error.

I love the cup and if feels like a completly different car to my Phase I (I know he has coilovers) but to drive daily, his feels slower but with a bigger 4.5k kick while mine seems more grunty due to the exhaust note and filter noise, not that any of this count because as stated his is faster.

The gear ratios do make a difference, his clearly pulls on mine from say 25 revs in third and he pulls away no problem at all, all be it slowly! When it comes down to who's is the fastest with Dansta and I it;s all about reading the road and driver skill nothing more, that 0.00001 second or what ever it is he pulls on me counts for nothing if the little fucker misses a gap!

Fortunatly though, I have drilled discs, uprated pads (which overheat all the time), briaded hoses and new fluid which really does give me an advanage on his even though he has those huge great 16" wheels over my little 15". The next test will be a wheel swap, which should be quite interesting as he should pull away like a demon on speed but will my ratios pick it back up and will his haddling really fail him with small wheels against my bigger ones and later braking? Only a Sunday afternoon face-off will tell!

But yet again I have to say to anyone, fast cup or tuned 182, I have big balls and a lot of on the road experience so bring it on! ;)
