Throttles cables are generally reputed to give the driver more 'feel' for the mechanical control of the position of the throttle itself. To achieve this 'feel for throttle' though you need to be dedicated to the car and have ultra thin soled shoes on so that all the feedback comes through the pedal box. A good acquainted driver should be able to 'feel' the position of the mechanical place of the throttle of his / her car. In the same way that he /she knows when the pads are just skimming the discs when applying braking pressure.
FBW are just as reliable (if not more) but the general concensus is that throttle cables are more driver feedback related. However they wont be around forever and FBW is def here to stay!
Finally something resembling a quantifiable reply!! The delay happens when in neutral and blipping the throttle, or at least it did until I had my grpN ECU fitted. Now it's completely instantaneous - The GrpN ECU is programmed to open the throttle as quick as possible.
Cables throttles have all but disappeared already. In fact, when I was looking for a car last time round, the mk1 172 (which was advertised with a picture of a phase 2 ) was the only car I drove with a cable (think MCS and CTR are FBW too).
I'm pretty sure that most people just jump on the bandwagon with these things, trying to make themselves look like something they are not. Whilst becoming dedicated to my car and wearing thin soled shoes sounds very appealing, i think it's a bit much for the drive to work.
