Cam/Aux belt and Service

  Honda & VW
Right i have enquired about Cam/Aux belts being done on the Mrs' 2005 182 as it's just turned 36k.

Due to ALL the amazing things people say about Fred i am inclined to use him but as he is about 1 1/4 drive away it would be silly of me not to ring around places more local.

Fred's prices seem very reasonable but i am just puzzled about the service required at 36k aside to the belts being done.

Fred states a 12k service is just £100 (inc Vat) when done with the belts yet a local Renault specialist said that the 36k service is quite involved and would be £258.50 (inc Vat).

Both are almost exact on the belt price but can someone help me understand why the such a vast difference in price (if there is one), saying that the local place said they do a Gear box oil and Coolant change?

All help welcome, many thanks in advance

Best thing to do is look in the handbook. That will tell you exactly what needs doing at 36k.

I'm assuming you're doing the cambelt and kit on time?

Cam belts on a 182 is due at 72K miles or 5 years old. So it will need doing. Also your advised to get the rollers and pretenstioners done too.

Sorry mate, i know about he belts etc my question is more Service related. Feel free to read it again and give me your feedback.

So you want people to tell you why a garage, employing lots of people, with massive overheads are more expensive than Fred who works for himself for exactly the same thing?

No Revels, if you look again what i am actually asking is what difference would people imagine there to be in the services being carried out, Fred referes to his as a 12k service and the local garage state a 36k.
Now as 12k goes into 36k 3 times do i assume it's just the 3rd 12k or is a 36k totally different.

better?

As far as i can remember theres not alot different between the services, just the 36K also includes break fluid, aux belt, and going by your post the gear box oil.

I think the main price difference you are seeing is purely the fact that its an actual garage. I could be wrong and usualy am :p

It would help if you explain properly.

Ask the garage what the service includes. Ask Fred what the service includes.

Check your handbook. Common sense TBH.

I'm really s**t at typing what i'm trying to say so bear with me....

Look in your handbook and it will tell you what items require replacing on a 36k service. One of those is an Aux Belt kit.

As your car is not due a cambelt until 72,000 miles, I assumed you were wanting to replace it on time? As in its due not on miles, but on time (5 years.)

Putting all that to one side, I am assuming fred is offering you a 12k service for £100 and the Auxillery belt on top of that. Ergo he will not actually be carrying out a 36k service which involves a coolant and gearbox oil change as per your other garages quote.

  It's A Reno
Ok, I have the manual infront of me.

All services appear to be the same, with additional operations being

air and cabin filter per 12000 miles

Your brake fluid according to the book was 1 year ago.

Your belts are now due.

So, it depends what Reno are doing and what Fred is doing.

Oh, and stop picking on Revels. ;)

As I edited in on the other post, it depends what both intend to do, but I'd be shocked if Fred wasn't the best value out of the 2.

I'm glad about that. He has feelings too you know...................apparently. ;)

I really don'y get what so complicated.

needs
12k service
cambelt kit
aux kit

Cambelt + aux belt should be £400-500
Service £100-£150

Brake fluids and coolant should have been changed at 4 year period, but i've left mine till it's 5 to do along with cambelt.

I've just had my car done with nw performance today! I've gotta say they are top blokes there and I don't think you will beat their prices! Full service, cam belt and auxiliary belt and the tensioners £466! Can't fault them! Thanks boys!
