Camera detector placement

Do you have to fit your detector in specific places in order for them to work. Is the sensor in the unit or is it all done on GPS?

Depends. Some of them to do have sensors, usually the older models of Snooper and Valentine. They are best placed in the front windshield (especially if they have laser sensors) to allow for max sensor visibility.
I don't think the same follows for GPS units, I would imagine that so long as they have good satellite reception, anywhere is fine.

Do they work with solar reflective windscreens like Clio-Lane has?

Have you not noticed the redish tint to it?

There is a small window in the centre of the screen where I mount my gps reciever.
