Cams and headwork in a RS

I was just wondering if many people have taken this route? What gains did you get, how is the idle?

Headwork is good for increasing torque across the range on a standard ish motor.

I wouldnt expect a great deal more peak power wise, but will infact be a fair bit faster.

Hmmm, ok. I have contemplated ITB's but I think that ruins alot about the car I love. The mpg etc. However; cams, headwork and a map will be about £2k and gains can be debatable whereas no one can argue 3k on bodies transfroms the car but I don't want 10mpg when hoofing it.

Im running headwork and mild cams and what K-Tec has said is spot on. Loads more torque but not really a increase in peak power.

TB's and cams should be in a different league to cams and headwork plus just about the same cost overall and less work fitting

How much are you looking at for headwork?

I know you have different stages of work with respective costs, but any general figures?

You wont get less economy with ITB's

but there is a simple equation.... at peak throttle you need more fuel to make more power.... that applies to ANY tuning mod...

but you will typically get about 280-300 miles from a tank with ITB's

Well, I currently get those mileages with a combined mix of hammering it and taking it steady. I really doubt that like for like it would be the above mileages with ITBs.

it IS viable. You can get that kind of economy, it's been done on multiple cars. effiency plays an important part

Ok. Fair enough. Maybe I am not explaining my point well enough. What I am saying is that with cams and headwork over ITB's I will use proportionatley less fuel on my average run.

Dont argue with the pro's.

Lol. Well, I know TheJesus quite well and his ITB'd old car would do about 10 to the gallon when hammering it. I hammer mine a fair bit and on a very heavy run I can get about 250 to a tank. So, like for like, how can I get that mileage with ITBs which are notoriously hard on fuel.

I will make this more simple.

Ok...

When hoofing it how many miles per gallon will I get with:

A Throttle bodies
B Cams and headwork

its based on power...

BSFC.... Brake Specific Fuel Consumption.

its the same engine.... so with more power it will use or need more fuel to reach target AFR

so if ITB's make 200 bhp and cams and headwork make 200bhp it will be like for like fuel wise...

Thanks for that. I for some reason had it that ITBs were heavier on fuel for the same gains? But from what you have said that is wrong.

Given me something to think about.

Jamie, stop thinking like an accountant and go for the ITB's ;)

Cams and headwork wont have the wide torque and power spread like ITB's, so from an economy point of view having more power lower down means less load required to go as quick. Simples
