Can boot struts be shortened?

Can gas struts be shortened. I am getting a V6 spoiler for my Clio 172 but as the V6 and Trophy use shorter struts the spoiler will catch the roof.
I am not paying what Renault are asking.
So can they be modded?

Bastid. Never mind. Looks like i'll have to source some shorter struts from something else.
