Can the PS3 play import DVD's?

I have a 250GB Slim - oh, get me. I was wondering if this will play NTSC DVD's, as the one I'm wanting is only in stock in America, and won't be released in the UK until next year, which is a bit too late for a Christmas present.

Cheers.

get a cheap multi-region standalone player.

I've got an old Samsung (about 10 years old now) and it plays anything I throw at it.... except blu-ray, obviously

I used to have a CD for my PS2 that you bunged in and it read it then let you play any region DVD. Tried it with the PS3 though and it told me to f**k off.

Or you could download Handbrake onto your computer, convert the DVD to MKV or MP4, stick it on a USB stick and then watch it through your PS3. I've done that with a few of my Region 1 DVDs as the Sony DVD/HD recorder I have now isn't region free like my old Sony DVD player was.
