Canon 400d - Bag & Accessories

  Nissan Jewk
I've got my hands on my first DSLR - Canon 400d, with the stock 18-55mm lens. I know absolutely nothing so far about photography, but it's about time I got myself a new hobby!

I do need a new bag though. I've seen this: http://www.lovecases.co.uk/hama-110-colt-syscase-camera-bag-black.html - Any good? Can anyone recommend any others?

I've got a couple of 4Gb compact flash memory cards and a spare battery also. Any other "must haves" I should have for this unit? Appreciate any help you guys can give :approve:

Seems that you have the absoloute must haves - battery/cards (hopefully they're high speed?)

As for a bag, I have a LowerPro AW202 - an awesome rucksack that holds all of my kit: http://www.tomcash.co.uk/camera-kit-update/

LowerPro make good bags in general, if you want quality.

That particular one is a single strap, so you can swing it around for quick side-access to your camera. Very nifty.

I love it to bits, but tend to find myself using my BlackRapid Sport strap whenever I can because it's just so easy!

That strap is the BEST thing I've ever bought for this hobby. (I also only started in April).

If you've got a bit more money to spend, get a telephoto or a wide angle. I love both of mine so hard and they were only cheap!

I've got one of these .. http://products.lowepro.com/product/SlingShot-202-AW,2192,4.htm (I think it's the same as Tom's mentioned above!) and it's perfect for my 7D, couple of lenses and some extra bits (wallet etc) when needed. Don't think I paid much for it though ? Can't remember...)

All I'd suggest is reading the guides, and USE IT ! Can't learn without doing ;)

When you come to upgrade, buy a 50 or 35mm f/1.8 and go from there

Haha! I don't want to take photos of the front of my bugeye scooby - might crack the lens :(

Yeah man, exactly the same bag.

I got mine for £50 - was supposed to be £70 IIRC.

I think generally, you can get them for sub £50. I got mine from Jessops on the high-street, so I probably paid way more than you would online.

I have the next one up to Niall's, the Fastpack 250.

Really comfortable and enough room for my 5D MK2 with a 100-400mm lens fitted, plus a couple more lenses.

I've got one of the smaller slingshot bags, had been perfectly happy with it until a couple of recent trips to London where it felt a bit of a faff. Just bought a lowepro pro messenger 160aw which will hopefully prove a bit quicker/more user friendly in situations where I'm pulling the camera in and out of the bag a lot.
