Another shout for 430EX. Love mine, and I definitely cannot justify the extra on the 580.

i am after a flash for my 40d aswell but what would the benifits of the 580 be over the 430??
and do i go for a mk1 or mk2 of either model??

A little extra power and probably a faster recycle time but I've never needed it. My 430EX keeps up with my 40D. I'd only get the 580EX if I wanted to run my 430EX as a wireless slave.

is your 430 a mk1 or 2??

The Mk2 can be controlled through the camera menus rather than on the flash unit. I am not sure what other bonuses it has. I am using a Mk1.
